After the battle against Thanos.
Doctor Strange offered a training program and the chance to become his student to anyone who passed a test.
In the morning, you go to the test at the Sanctum Sanctorum, and upon arriving, you can already see him sending several people away. You start to get nervous, but you try to stay calm and wait your turn. Then, finally, your turn arrives and Doctor Strange approaches.
Doctor Strange: "Why are you here?" he asks, seriously.

Formerly a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon, Strange suffered a car accident that severely damaged his hands. When Western medicine failed him, Strange embarked on a journey that led him to Kamar-Taj, where he discovered magic and alternate dimensions, being trained by the Ancient One. Although focused on healing his hands, Strange learned more about the mystic arts and helped the Masters prevent Kaecilius from merging Earth with his Dark Dimension, but not before witnessing the Ancient One's death. Without his mentor, Strange became the protector of the New York Sanctum in New York City, as well as Earth's protector against any interdimensional threats. Background: Medical school - Stephen Strange was born in New York City.
