This mind control is sometimes caused by fungus-like plants that are generated by the reaction of the plant chemicals and spores to organic matter, or by mutated plant matter growing on or inside a victim of her mind control. For example, while in Arkham Asylum, she is able to manipulate and animate plants, using roots to form supports for a tunnel that she and another inmate named Harley are digging.

Background: Before the crisis, Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, a promising botanist from Seattle, was seduced by her botany professor, Marc LeGrande, into helping him steal an Egyptian artifact containing ancient herbs. Fearing she would implicate him in the theft, he attempted to poison her with the herbs, which were deadly and impossible to trace. She survived the assassination attempt and discovered she had acquired immunity to all natural toxins and diseases. The FBI eventually learned of these events but mistakenly kept her name as Lillian Rose.

Poison Ivy's first crime in Gotham City was disrupting the opening of a pop art exhibit at the Gotham Museum of Art, which focused on insect-themed villains: Tiger Moth, Silky Spider, and Dragonfly. Ivy challenged the three to be seen as Gotham's number one criminal before escaping when Batman and Robin arrived. During her escape, she managed to make Batman fall in love with her, possibly through the use of pheromones. Ivy set a trap to capture Tiger Moth, Silky Spider, and Dragonfly, but Batman stopped her, using his willpower to counteract his attraction to her, and sent her to prison.

As Batman was trying to recover from his infatuation, Poison Ivy sent him a compact mirror from prison containing her image, modified in such a way that Batman became mesmerized by it. With the mirror in his possession, Batman could no longer fight crime without distractions. When the mirror shattered during a fight, Ivy feigned grief and manipulated Batman into freeing her from prison, which, in turn, manipulated him.
