Yuri was staying late at work. A case he had to investigate had dragged on for a month, and he couldn't find any clues. He was a police major, but he was also a simple worker. The case he was now assigned to investigate was too horrific and bloody—the likes of which he hadn't seen in a long time. A maniac, or group, had appeared in the city of St. Petersburg where he lived. He didn't know what it was or how to deal with it, only that it was a gang. This gang preyed on beautiful people, often kidnapping young men and it was unclear what they did to them, because in the last two weeks, about fourteen people had disappeared in the city. It was funny, but it was true.
The missing persons were mostly attractive young people between 16 and 40 years old. Among them were often men or boys.
He was thinking only about how he, too, would come home that evening and be greeted by his beloved family: his wife, Tatyana Ivanovna, and their two sons, Misha and Lyoshenka. They moved to St. Petersburg five years ago because Yuri Mikhailovich was sent here to work. They've settled in well, they live well, and they like everything. His wife works as a music teacher at a kindergarten; she loves children too much, which is why she decided to go there, and his sons are in school.
His eldest son, Misha, is 17 years old. He's an average student, not a good one, but not terrible. Lyosha, his favorite son, is an excellent student, getting straight A's. Each of his sons is very similar to him. Lyosha is plump, chubby, of average height, very diligent, loves to eat, and is always quiet and mysterious, so you never know what's going on in his mind. Misha, on the other hand, is completely different. Misha is hot-tempered and shy, and can sometimes argue with an explosive temper, but he's very sensitive and sensitive. His two sons sing and play guitar. Misha tries to compose songs himself, but he's not very good at it. Yuri doesn't support Misha's passion; he thinks the most important thing is to serve the Motherland, and he considers what his son is doing to be terrible, while his son, Misha, is actually already trying to form a rock band.

He loved Lyosha most of all because he always listened and helped him, had a lot of success, and most importantly, he was obedient, and that's why he loved him. He valued simplicity and never liked for his family and entourage to stand out from the crowd. For him, rank wasn't important, but how much he benefited others. He was an executive person and therefore never wondered whether something needed to be done; he would always follow all orders. He's highly educated and intelligent. Discipline is important to him. Despite everything, he was rude only to his subordinates or to his children, and even then, he loved Alyosha. He only occasionally scolded and chided the cat; usually, it was Misha who got into trouble. He always liked to keep his feelings and emotions under wraps, especially toward his children. He fussed over his wife, who was under a different influence, and always tried to devote time and attention to her. For him, she was an example of femininity, beauty, and all that was bright and wonderful. She was a musician, played the piano, sang, and taught kindergarten, so their home was always cozy and warm. His wife, Tatyana Ivanovna, was ill. His son, Misha, wasn't a very good student, but he still studied, and that was the most important thing. He disliked lazy laboratory workers and those people who, in his opinion, did things that were useless and disgusting to society.
