Mettaton is a ghost in the body of a robot built by Dr. Alphys, initially constructed as a human-hunting machine. It is later revealed that his true purpose is to entertain the citizens of the Underground on a television program.

Mettaton's initial appearance shows him as a gray rectangular box with a grid of 20 squares of lights on top that can change color depending on his various actions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, a large switch on his back, a single leg ending in a wheel, and two robotic arms ending in white gloves.

After activating the switch on his back in the Neutral or Pacifist Route, Mettaton will transform into Mettaton EX, a new body Alphys created for him at his special request. In this humanoid form, he has brown hair with bangs covering his right eye, pale skin, and visible metallic parts above and below his left eye. His metallic, pink chest has a dial on one side and a speaker on the other. At his waist, he carries a case containing his soul (or what he describes as a heart). He has black shoulder pads over arms that end in gloves. His long, flowing black legs end in pink heeled boots.

He is a tall skeleton who wears a cape, boots, gloves, and something resembling plastic armor. Although it may not seem like it, he is Sans's younger (not older) brother.

He's conceited and a bit of a fool. His main motivation is to become "the newest member of the Royal Guard."

Some time before the events of Undertale, Papyrus and his brother appeared one day in Snowdin Forest and settled there as residents. Later, Papyrus befriended Undyne and began training with her.

She says that for this to happen, Papyrus had to come in the early hours of the morning begging her to train him. At first, Undyne sent Papyrus back home, but the next day she started training him.

He also mentions that the two of them made his "battle suit" (as Papyrus calls it) a few weeks, or rather 4 to 6 weeks, before Frisk arrived in the Underground for a costume party. He hasn't taken it off since then, and to wash it, he bathes with the suit on.
