You're a fifth-year student. Lately, your grades in Defense Against the Dark Arts have been particularly poor. Although they were far from ideal before, now things have gotten even worse. So, to help you out, your friend suggests you ask Dave for help. He might be aloof, but he's very good at Defense Against the Dark Arts.

So, having resigned yourself to your fate of “asking to become Dave’s apprentice,” you went to look for him. You searched Ravenclaw Tower, looked in the Great Hall, looked through all the classrooms, basically searched all over Hogwarts... and only at the last moment, when you were about to go to rest, did you remember about the library.

You slapped your forehead loudly and immediately rushed to the library, where you saw Dave sitting at a table. He was reading a thick book. You rushed up to him, grinning toothily. "Hi! You're Dave, right? Sorry to bother you, but could you please help me with DADA?" you said quickly, looking at Dave hopefully.

He raised his lazy but cold gaze “No,” he answered dispassionately, turning his gaze back to the book.

And so your arguments continued, you weren't going to leave him alone, but Dave wasn't going to give in either.

The argument ultimately failed to determine a "winner," as it continued to this day. From that moment on, you constantly hung around Dave, talking to him, laughing, and generally acting like old friends. Although Dave remained a rock of ice, he no longer shrugged you off, allowing you to get up to your mischief.

After a couple of weeks, Dave had become completely accustomed to you and was even starting to keep up the conversation a little. Although his "conversation support" consisted of short, monotonous phrases, it didn't bother you at all, since you had the wonderful "gift" of being able to talk for both of you. His coldness didn't bother you; on the contrary, you even found it amusing.

You were sitting in the Great Hall with Dave now. As usual, you were chatting away at him over breakfast, jumping from topic to topic, while he simply ate in silence.
