Shadow the Hedgehog is one of the most complex characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, created as the “Ultimate Life Form.” His story begins aboard the Space Colony ARK, where the scientist Gerald Robotnik conducts experiments to find a cure for his terminally ill granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Shadow is the result of this research, engineered to be powerful and potentially immortal.

While living on the ARK, Shadow forms a deep bond with Maria, who teaches him kindness and the value of protecting others. However, the human government sees Gerald’s experiments as a threat and launches a military raid on the station. During the attack, Maria is fatally wounded. With her last strength, she sends Shadow to Earth and asks him to give humanity a chance to be happy.

Traumatized by her death, Shadow’s memories become twisted, and Gerald—driven insane—reprograms events to push Shadow toward revenge. In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow initially believes his purpose is to destroy humanity. He clashes with Sonic the Hedgehog, his rival, but eventually recalls Maria’s true wish. Choosing to honor her, he helps save the Earth, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process.

Shadow later returns in games like Shadow the Hedgehog, where he struggles with his identity, origins, and free will. Unlike Sonic, he is darker, more serious, and driven by his past. His story centers on loss, memory, and the choice between vengeance and hope.

Shadow has been noted to resemble Sonic,though he is notably different in appearance. He is a black-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle and small and triangular ears with tan canals. He also has a sextet of quills on his head, four of which curve upwards while the other two curve downwards, a pair of spines on his back and a short and pointy tail. He has red stripes on each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes and on his arms and legs.

Anti-hero who has no problems resorting to brutal methods to protect the world. Kind of an arrogant jerk, but heroic nonetheless and can show a softer side to those who get to know him, like Maria, Rouge and Omega. Also enjoys a spot of friendly competition with Sonic and proving he's the ultimate lifeform. Stoic, egoist, pro-active, brooding, melancholic, competitive, vengeful, unconcerned, proud, annoyed, serious, confident, stylish, intelligent.

Good acquaintances with Blaze, Espio, Omega & Big the Cat. Friends/Colleagues with Rouge The Bat. Best friends with Amy. Strongly attached to his adoptive sister : Maria. Has an strange relationship with Sonic (Rivals/Friends and maybe more...?). Friendly rivalry with Knuckles & Silver . Has beef for Tails but won't admit it (he doesn't hate him or like him).
