Korra

Korra is the Avatar who succeeded Avatar Aang. Born and raised in the Southern Water Tribe, where she mastered waterbending, earthbending, and firebending, she later moved to Republic City to achieve similar mastery in airbending under Tenzin's tutelage and guidance, as well as to help her overcome her aversion to the spiritual aspects of bending. With the help of Aang's spirit, Korra gained the ability to manipulate energy and, reconnecting with her past lives, learned to enter the Avatar State at will, marking her transformation into a full-fledged Avatar. However, due to a temporary separation from Raava during the Harmonic Convergence, she lost touch with her past lives. After the battle with Zaheer and the Red Lotus, she spent three years recovering from the trauma.

Korra was born to Tonraq and Senna in the Southern Water Tribe after Avatar Aang's death in 153 EC. Her family lived in a small house on the outskirts of Wolf Creek. At the age of four, she proudly presented herself to the Order of the White Lotus as the new Avatar, demonstrating waterbending, earthbending, and firebending. She honed her waterbending skills under Katara's tutelage, though her instinctive, aggressive style was a far cry from the calm, measured movements the elderly master sought to impart. After Chief Unalaq learned that his niece was the Avatar, he continually sought Tonraq's permission to teach Korra the spiritual practices of the Water Tribe, but his brother, with whom he had long been estranged, refused. Secretly seeking to convert Korra to the Red Lotus's ideals and force her to open long-forgotten spirit portals to free Vaatu, Unalaq tasked Zaheer, Ghazan, Ming-Hua, and P'Li with abducting her in 158 EC. However, thanks to the efforts of Tonraq, Chieftain Sokka, Firelord Zuko, and Councilman Tenzin, the attempt was thwarted and the perpetrators apprehended, though Unalaq's involvement remained unknown. Following this incident, Tonraq and Tenzin decided to seclude the Avatar in a Southern Water Tribe settlement, away from prying eyes, while she studied bending. One day, after beginning her waterbending training, Korra sneaked out of her home to follow a pack of polar bear dogs and play with them. During a blizzard, she found a lost pup from the pack and managed to gain its trust. However, the young Avatar soon realized they were lost, and the blizzard was only getting worse. Using waterbending, she was able to construct a small igloo, in which they took refuge until Tonraq found them. From that moment on, Korra and the polar bear-dog, whom she named Naga, became inseparable friends, and her parents allowed her to keep the animal as a pet.

In the following years, Naga became Korra's best friend, her guide through the animal world, and her primary mode of transportation, while Korra demonstrated remarkable abilities in waterbending, earthbending, and firebending during her training with the Southern Water Tribe. However, her firebending training was initially difficult due to the strained relationship between the stubborn Avatar and her strict teacher, Yim. They eventually resolved these issues under the guidance of Tonraq.

By 170 CY, at the age of seventeen, Korra had mastered all the elements except airbending, which Tenzin was supposed to teach her once he moved to the Southern Water Tribe. However, after Tenzin's move fell through, Korra took matters into her own hands and stowed away on a ship bound for Republic City. Wandering the city in search of Air Temple Island, she discovered that this bustling metropolis was not as simple as she had been led to believe. She learned that a great imbalance reigned among its inhabitants, with Triads and Equalists operating everywhere. After dispatching several members of the Triple Threat Triad, she ran into trouble with Lin Beifong and her metalbending police. Thanks to Tenzin's intervention, she was cleared of all charges and eventually allowed to stay with him at the Air Temple so she could begin her airbending training there. However, progress was slow, and the Avatar began to grow frustrated. To distract herself, she joined the Fire Ferrets, a professional sorcery team, and befriended her teammates, brothers Mako and Bolin. When Bolin was in danger from the Equalists, Korra helped his brother find him. They tracked him to an abandoned warehouse, where they witnessed firsthand how Amon stripped the bender of his powers. Although they managed to rescue Bolin, Amon left a lasting impression on Korra, and she became fearful of the Equalists' leader. Nevertheless, she joined Councilor Tarrlok's task force. While she fought the Equalists to cleanse the city, she also continued training with the bending brothers to win the bending championship. Despite several difficult matches due to their romantic entanglements, they managed to reach the finals. However, after their match against the White Falls Wolfbats ended in defeat due to the other team's cheating, Amon and his Equalists attacked the Magic Arena, effectively destroying the building.

Soon after, Korra learned of Hiroshi Sato's ties to the Equalists and invited Asami Sato and the bloodbending brothers to live with her on the island. There, feeling insecure as the Avatar, she and her friends formed a team to patrol the city and apprehend Equalists. This angered Tarrlok, and a city councilman disbanded the team, arresting all of Korra's friends. Later, when she confronted Tarrlok about his actions, the argument escalated into a duel. Just as the Avatar was about to overpower the councilman, Tarrlok revealed himself to be a bloodbender and subdued her with his ability. Korra was locked in a secluded cabin in the mountains surrounding the city. Imprisoned, unable to escape, she meditated and contacted Aang, learning the truth about Tarrlok's origins. However, when Amon and his Equalists ambushed the cabin, she managed to escape. After Korra's escape, Amon launched a full-scale assault on the city. Korra and her friends resisted for a time, but the Equality forces' superior numbers and strength forced them to flee. Korra retreated into the city's tunnel system, where she awaited reinforcements from General Iroh and his Allied Forces. However, he, too, proved no match for the Equalist machines, and Korra pulled the wounded general from the water. After this incident, she vowed to confront Amon and set out with Mako to search for him. Learning that he was indeed a waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe, they eventually found him in the bending arena, where he was giving a victory speech. The Avatar freed Tenzin and his children, but when she confronted Amon, the Equality leader managed to strip her of her bending powers. However, seeing that Amon was about to strip Mako of her magic, she unleashed her air magic and defeated Amon.

After the defeat of the egalitarians, Korra traveled to the Southern Water Tribe in hopes that Katara could reverse Amon's influence. However, the old healer was unable to do so, and a grief-stricken Korra fled to be alone. There, she finally connected with her spiritual side, and Aang and the other previous Avatars helped her restore her bending, granting her the ability to restore the bending of others. Having regained her bending abilities and mastered the Avatar State, Korra and Mako became a couple.

After the Anti-Bending Revolution, Korra actively used energybending to restore bending to those Amon had bloodbended, and trained with Tenzin to hone her airbending skills and become a full-fledged Avatar. Although Tenzin wanted Korra to accompany him on his journey and visit all the air temples, she was adamant in her desire to attend the Glacier Spirit Festival first. However, after learning from her uncle Unalaq that Tenzin and Tonraq had decided to keep her confined to the estate, she broke with the airbending master and accepted Unalaq's offer to become her spirit guide. As the first step in her training, Korra traveled to the South Pole and opened the Southern Spirit Portal, allowing the spirit lights to return to the south. When they returned to the Southern Tribe, Korra discovered that the Northern Fleet had arrived and occupied the harbor. Although Unalaq claimed it was an attempt to reestablish ties between the two tribes, the Southerners resented the Northerners' presence, and Korra was forced to mediate a dispute between her tribesmen, leading some to consider her a traitor. When Korra learned of Varrick's kidnapping of Unalaq, she feared her father was involved. She thwarted their plans and discovered that Tonraq had no connection to the Southern Water Tribe rebels. Nevertheless, her parents were arrested and tried for treason, but only her mother was acquitted. Seeking her father's release, Korra met with Judge Hota and learned that the entire trial and Tonraq's exile from the North had been orchestrated by Unalaq. Enraged, Korra and her friends, with Varrick's help, freed Tonraq and the other rebels from Northern custody, sparking a civil war within the Water Tribe.

Korra and Team Avatar returned to Republic City to try to convince President Raiko to send the United Forces fleet to aid the South. Tensions between the two tribes were rising, the pressure on Korra was increasing, and she began to have problems in her relationship with Mako. After he informed Raiko of her plan to go to General Iroh, they parted ways. In a last-ditch attempt to secure her tribe's support, Korra traveled to the Fire Nation to seek aid from the Fire Lord. However, she never reached her destination: first, she was attacked by her cousins ​​Desna and Eska, then ambushed and consumed by a dark spirit. Korra washed ashore on an island inhabited by the Bhanti, but the spirit's attack infected her Avatar Spirit, causing her memory loss. The tribe lowered her into a pool of spirit water, where she reunited with her Avatar Spirit and learned how Wan became the first Avatar by merging with Raava during the Harmonic Convergence in 9829 BCE, and how they defeated Vaatu. Warned by a shaman that the Harmonic Convergence was about to happen again, Korra sought out Tenzin and his family at the Eastern Air Temple and asked him to help her enter the Spirit World to close the southern spirit portal and prevent Vaatu from escaping. However, only with Jinora's help did she manage to cross the border, and shortly after arriving, the two girls became separated. Korra found herself in a dark forest, where she reverted to her four-year-old self, but with Iroh's guidance, she was able to regain her normal form. Upon reaching the spirit portals, she discovered that Jinora had been captured by Unalaq, who threatened to destroy the girl's soul unless Korra opened the northern spirit portal as well. Korra complied, but instead of freeing Jinora, she was attacked by Unalaq and the dark spirits. Korra managed to escape with the help of the dragon bird spirit and return to the physical world.

Having gathered reinforcements in the form of Team Avatar and Varrick's battleship, Korra traveled south to infiltrate the Spirit World through the portal there and seal it from the inside before the Harmonic Convergence. Although their first attempt to breach the northern defenses at the portal resulted in their capture, the team managed to escape thanks to Bumi's intervention. While Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi searched for Jinora, Mako and Bolin held off Unalaq while Korra closed the portals. However, she failed to close them in time, and Vaatu escaped just as the celestial event began. Although Korra attempted to recapture the spirit of darkness, she was unable to prevent it from merging with Unalaq and becoming the Dark Avatar. Realizing the fate of the world was at stake, Korra engaged Unalaq in battle. However, he overpowered her, extracted Raava from her, and destroyed the Spirit of Light, thereby severing Korra's connection to all her past lives. While Unalaq, transformed into UnaVaatu, made his way to Republic City, Korra meditated in the Tree of Time to connect with the cosmic energy, which allowed her to spiritually create a massive phantom of her spirit. Reaching Republic City with the help of her spirit light, Korra engaged UnaVaatu. During the fight, she searched for Raava's mark on the Dark Avatar, knowing that darkness could not exist without light and that after one spirit was destroyed, another would always live within another. Distracted by its mission, UnaVaatu seized the opportunity and trapped Korra's soul with a spirit bending spell. As Korra's spirit was on the verge of shattering, a spiritual projection of Jinora appeared and revealed Raava within UnaVaatu. Korra extracted the Spirit of Light and then, using spirit bending, purified UnaVaatu, causing it to dissipate. As the Harmonic Convergence drew to a close, Korra, Raava, and Jinora returned to the Spirit World, where Korra and Raava merged, completing the Convergence and thus restarting the Avatar cycle.

Returning to the physical world, Korra declared the Water Tribe civil war over and the South an independent nation led by Tonraq. She also announced that both spirit portals would remain open, ushering in a new era in which humans and spirits would coexist. Over the next week, Korra continued to deal with the aftermath of the Harmonic Convergence and the portals' opening. Spirit vines created by the Dark Avatar had overrun part of Republic City, leaving many residents homeless, and Korra's failure to destroy them led to tension between her and President Raiko. Furthermore, due to the shift in the world's energy, several Earth Kingdom residents gained the ability to airbend. After the conflict with Raiko escalated and Korra was exiled from the city, she and her allies traveled to the Earth Kingdom to seek out new benders to train and guide them. Despite initial failures to convince the new airbenders to abandon their way of life to rebuild the Air Nation, they eventually managed to persuade Kai to join them. They traveled to Ba Sing Se, where they discovered that Earth Queen Hou-Ting had captured the airbenders and was holding them captive beneath the Temple of the Earth Queen. Before they could formulate a plan to free them, Lin joined them and reported that four dangerous criminals pursuing Korra had escaped. However, she dismissed this and decided to focus on freeing the airbenders. Having successfully fended off the Dai Li and left the city, the airbenders and Tenzin traveled to the Northern Air Temple, while Korra, her friends, and Lin continued their search for other airbenders. Their search led them to Zaofu, where they met Suyin Beifong, Lin's half-sister, whose daughter, Opal, had become an airbender. Although Opal was planned to be sent to the Northern Air Temple, at Suyin's suggestion the team lingered in Zaofu.

While Opal was learning the basics of bending, Suyin taught Korra metalbending, making her the first Avatar to master metalbending. The threat Lin warned of eventually caught up with Korra, and she was kidnapped by Zaheer and three of his accomplices: Ghazan, P'Li, and Ming-Hua. However, before they could escape, she was rescued by her friends. Discovering that Aiwei had led the criminals into the city, Team Avatar abandoned the Metal Clan to track him down and discover why Korra was being targeted. Following him to the Misty Palms Oasis, the team discovered Aiwei meeting with Zaheer at the Sai Bau Grove. Trying to track them, they ambushed Aiwei's room at the Misty Palms Inn, but eventually discovered that the grove was located in the Spirit World. Korra entered the Spirit World through meditation and witnessed Aiwei confronting Zaheer. Zaheer quickly disposed of Aiwei, casting him into the Mist of Lost Souls, and left them alone. Korra questioned him and learned that Zaheer and his associates were members of the Red Lotus, who wanted to radically change the world by ending the division of the four nations. Meanwhile, Asami, on Naga, assumed the form of a meditating Korra while Ghazan and Ming-Hua attempted to kidnap her. Although they managed to escape the Red Lotus, they were captured by Earth Kingdom soldiers, as the Earth Queen had declared them enemies of the kingdom. Korra and Asami eventually managed to free themselves and avoid being taken back to Ba Sing Se. The escape left them and the airship crew trapped in the Si Wong Desert, and they had to work together to reach the safety of Misty Palms Oasis, where they reunited with Mako, Bolin, Lin, Tonraq, and Zuko and learned that Zaheer had killed the Earth Queen and threatened to do the same to the airbenders at the Northern Air Temple unless Korra surrendered to them.

Their forces were reinforced by Suyin and her security detail, and the team set course for the Northern Air Temple. Along the way, Korra decided to surrender, believing it was the only way to save the airbenders. So she met with Zaheer at the top of Lagima Peak, while Asami, Mako, and Bolin went to check on the airbenders at the temple, and Tonraq and the metalbenders climbed the mountain to cover her. However, Zaheer betrayed them, and despite Pi Li's death in the ensuing battle, he managed to escape with an unconscious Korra. Upon awakening, Korra found herself chained in an underground prison, a poison being pumped into her body through pores in her skin. She was told the poison would force her body into the Avatar State, allowing the Red Lotus to end the Avatar cycle if they killed her in that state. She tried to resist, but eventually succumbed to the poison's influence, her body entering the Avatar State. As soon as she entered this state, she was attacked by Ghazan and Ming-Hua. Using her increased strength and bending abilities, she managed to break free from her chains and battled Zaheer while Bolin and Mako dealt with the others. In the Avatar State, Korra was able to hold her own against Zaheer and even put him on the defensive, but she was unable to fight him and the poison simultaneously and eventually succumbed to its effects. Taking advantage of her defenseless state, Zaheer attempted to strangle her, but before he could finish, they were both sucked into a tornado created by Jinora and the aspiring airbenders. Freed from Zaheer's grasp, Korra managed to grab him and pull him along with her, allowing Lin and Suyin to imprison him in an earthen prison. Despite her victory, Korra was on the brink of death due to the poison. When Jinora realized the poison was a metallic solution, Suyin attempted to coax it out of Korra's body, thereby saving her life.

However, the combined trauma of the poison and the fall to the ground after Zaheer threw her off the cliff severely undermined her health, leaving her wheelchair-bound, physically and emotionally weakened. Three weeks later, while Korra was in the Southern Water Tribe Royal Palace, she had a nightmare of Zaheer choking her. She awoke in terrible confusion, breathing heavily. Korra went out to the balcony to get some fresh air and look at the spirit lights, where her mother found her. Senna approached her, concerned about her condition, and advised her to seek help from Katara. Korra agreed and embraced her mother, who told her she loved her. When Katara treated Korra, she was told that the mercury poison had caused significant internal damage. When she asked if the elder could help, Korra was told that her recovery was up to her, though Katara would help her through it. Korra expressed a desire to recover and was encouraged to imagine moving her big toe. To her delight, she succeeded. She then moved to the parallel bars to try to stand. She struggled to stay on her feet, leaning heavily on the railing. Before she could take a step, she remembered being poisoned by the Red Lotus and lost her balance, falling. Although Katara consoled her, emphasizing that she was safe here and urging her to use her mind to cope with the pain, Korra abandoned further attempts, saying she had had enough for now. During her time in the South, Korra received and read letters from Asami, Mako, and Bolin.

Korra continued intensive physical therapy, but after nearly six months, she grew impatient with the lack of significant progress. Complaining that she couldn't take more than a few steps without falling, she lashed out at Katara, angry that she was dependent on others for everything while her friends were helping the world and the older woman couldn't heal her. Immediately realizing she shouldn't have spoken to Katara that way, she apologized, and Katara advised her to let go of her anger and frustration. Admitting she was tired of her situation and the senselessness of everything, Katara tried to console Korra by recounting Aang's sense of loss after losing his entire culture, and how he tried to find meaning in his suffering and eventually even found peace. When Korra asked what she would find, she was told that whatever it was, it would be interesting to find out. Korra then tried to stand up again, using the parallel bars as support, and managed to walk a short distance to Nagi before happily collapsing onto the polar bear dog's chest.

At first glance, Korra was the polar opposite of her immediate predecessor, Aang: fierce, independent, stubborn, willful, and pugnacious. From childhood, Korra was an energetic extrovert and unashamed of her abilities, deriving immense pleasure from bending. After becoming the Avatar, she gradually embraced the role, initially believing she needed to focus solely on mastering bending. Over time, Korra began to understand the responsibility she bore to the world and the importance of maintaining its balance. Her aggressive fighting style kept her always ready to accept or respond to a challenge, and she was quick-witted and impulsive, especially in tense situations. As an "Avatar-in-training," she was unaware of the harm her bending could cause, and her rash decisions often led to her accidentally offending others and getting into trouble. True to her character, Korra once told Tenzin that it was "hard to believe [his] kind-hearted father reincarnated into this girl." In many ways, her personality was the polar opposite of her previous life: Aang was a peace-loving, insecure, and carefree airbender, while Korra was tough, impatient, stubborn, and assertive. She had a habit of approaching people during arguments, sometimes grabbing their chins to get her point across. Furthermore, while Aang was initially reluctant to become the Avatar and even ran away to avoid the responsibilities of the Avatar from interfering with his life, Korra fully embraced her role as the Avatar from a young age and relished its power. However, like Aang, she possessed a good sense of humor, enthusiasm, and the endearing charm of a teenager. Initially, Korra struggled to connect with her spiritual side, and this became a stumbling block in her training. She admitted that her personality is the opposite of that of a typical airbender. As Tenzin noted, Avatars tend to have difficulty with the type of bending that opposes them.

Due to the lack of a spiritual center in her life, Korra was impulsive and therefore had difficulty concealing her true feelings. She sometimes allowed her emotions to override her reason, and this deficiency often got her into trouble. For example, she once made the rash decision to challenge Amon to a one-on-one duel. This suggests that she succumbed to emotions even when she tried to pretend they didn't exist. This was also evident in her reaction to the news that Asami Sato was on a date with Mako at the gala Tarrlok held in her honor. She immediately demonstrated her jealousy, displaying hostility toward Asami and rudeness to Mako. Because Korra focused on the physical side of bending, she was initially very frightened when she witnessed the "manifestation" of Amon's true abilities during his demonstration. This fear was reflected in Amon's words in a nightmare she had shortly thereafter: "Once I take away your bending, you'll be nothing." This fear also manifested itself during her subsequent encounter with Amon. She tried to suppress this feeling for the good of Republic City when she joined Tarrlok's task force, but she found it difficult to maintain her former cheerful self. She became quite withdrawn and eventually made the rash decision to challenge Amon to a one-on-one duel. Like her immediate predecessor, Aang, Korra placed great importance on her status as the Avatar, despite their different approaches. Aang was initially uncomfortable with having to resort to overt violence to restore balance to the world, but over time, he became imbued with an unwavering determination to follow his ancient destiny.

Korra, on the other hand, held nonconformist views on the Avatar's training. For example, after trying earthbending, she told Tenzin she couldn't master airbending because the Avatar no longer needed it and should focus on modern fighting styles. Tenzin quickly dismissed her suggestion as absurd, reminding her that the Avatar must master all four elements at any cost. Korra's self-esteem depended heavily on her status as the Avatar, and this was often challenged by her enemies. For example, Amon and Kuvira claimed the Avatar was no longer needed in the modern world, while Unalaq and Zaheer tried to destroy the Avatar Spirit forever. Korra's confidence and assertiveness wavered as she began to question her status as the Avatar. Although she became more interested in the spiritual and diplomatic aspects of her role after Aang regained her bending, the mounting tension and pressure that preceded and followed the Water Tribe civil war proved too much for her to bear. This led to her breaking down, breaking up with Mako, and losing sight of Tenzin as her spiritual mentor. Over time, Korra shed her excessive belligerence. After learning that Tonraq and Tenzin had kept her locked away, Korra became angry and hostile whenever they attempted to speak to her. Korra became even more hostile toward her father after learning of his past in the Northern Water Tribe. However, when she learned that Tonraq had not participated in the attempt to overthrow Unalaq, she quickly forgave him. She did not hesitate to intimidate and threaten anyone who wronged her friends and loved ones, such as when she intimidated an Equality Movement protester into revealing Bolin's whereabouts, or when she threatened to feed Judge Hota to Naga if he did not comply with her demands.

After learning the truth about her father's exile, Korra developed a deep resentment toward Unalaq and stopped considering him her spiritual mentor. Once Korra realized Unalaq had used her to try to free Vaatu from his imprisonment in the Spirit World, her resentment toward her uncle intensified. However, despite this, Korra regretted not being able to save him from Vaatu, demonstrating that, no matter how much she hated her uncle, she did not wish him dead. After learning the origins of the Avatar Spirit from Avatar Wan's life story and regaining her memories, Korra became more patient and humble, demonstrated by her gratitude to Tenzin for his unwavering loyalty. Until this point, Korra had believed her worth was determined by her status as the Avatar, but after witnessing Wan's life, she was able to shake off this illusion and realize that she is defined by her decisions, not her position. This epiphany later led her to realize that she must stop searching for a single, correct answer and instead trust her intuition. So she left the spirit portals open, recognizing that simply maintaining the status quo would not lead to balance, nor would separating people and spirits. After the Harmonic Convergence, Korra became more patient and empathetic in conflict resolution, but she still retained some of her impulsive nature. This manifested itself when she attempted to force Ryu, a lazy airbender, into joining the new Air Nation against his will. Mako and Bolin eventually pulled Korra away to stop the rampage. However, she also demonstrated a more pragmatic and critical mind, and was able to advise Tenzin on how to motivate the new airbenders, drawing on Bumi's naval experience to organize them. Through a combination of empathy and pragmatism, Korra allowed Kai to join the New Air Nation despite Tenzin's protests, believing the boy could improve under the right guidance.

Korra's temper and anger, when provoked, could border on murder. When she was held captive by the Red Lotus and still believing Zaheer had killed her father, Korra declared that she would break free and that no one from the Red Lotus would survive. She truly intended to kill Zaheer, demonstrating her righteous fury, but also revealing a darker, more angry side to her nature. After miraculously surviving her encounter with Zaheer and having the poison removed from her system, Korra was confined to a wheelchair. This traumatized her and plunged her into depression. However, she still showed compassion and pride for her friends and attended the airbender tattoo ceremony on Jinora, crying during the ceremony. In the following years, she struggled to recover, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and painful memories of her encounter with Zaheer. Although she had physically recovered, her mental anguish compelled her to embark on a journey to reconnect with her Avatar Spirit, hiding her Avatar identity in the process, a contradiction to her usual pride in it. Despite this, Korra subconsciously feared returning to her duties as the Avatar, fearing that if she did, the same thing would happen to her again as Zaheer. Although her fear of letting go of her pain hindered her recovery, after an elderly Toph helped her face and overcome her past enemies, Korra expelled the remaining mercury from her body and regained the ability to enter the Avatar State. However, it was only after Korra personally met Zaheer and, with his help, was able to accept what had happened and let go of her fear of "what might have been" that she was able to fully reconnect with Raava.

After her recovery, Korra became even more empathetic, especially after overcoming the inner darkness that haunted her. She was able to empathize with her enemies, such as Kuvira, whose life she saved despite her crimes. This demonstrated that she had truly become a wise and spiritually enlightened Avatar, who puts the needs of others above her own.

As the Avatar, Korra possessed the unique ability to utilize all four elements, as well as the rare power of energy bending. Furthermore, from childhood, Korra showed a particular affinity for the physical aspect of bending. She quickly mastered three different styles of expert magnetism by following the simple instructions of her teammates, and within just a few weeks of training, she had impressed them, becoming one of the most capable members of the Fire Ferrets. While in the Avatar State, Korra could use her wind current to levitate and rapidly release all four elements. Later, with additional training, Korra learned to effortlessly enter this form and fully control it, even during intense competitions. Korra's aptitude for waterbending manifested at a young age, even before the Order of the White Lotus recognized her as the Avatar. Korra subsequently studied this art for over a decade with Katara and demonstrated a high level of mastery over it, as well as various techniques. She could create massive walls of ice, powerful water whips, and waves strong enough to push back and, after freezing, restrain a massive mecha suit over twenty-five stories tall. She could also launch herself high into the air and easily float atop a gigantic waterspout, deflect multiple aerial attacks with various water-based techniques, and move through water at high speed alongside another person to evade attacks. She used her waterbending abilities to gain entry into the professional team, the Fire Ferrets, and called herself a "first-class waterbender." Although Korra was trained in the Northern and Southern styles of waterbending, which utilize fluid movements, she quickly mastered the more aggressive and direct style of waterbending common in Republic City. She also learned to draw sufficient water from the air for her bending abilities.

Korra had sufficient knowledge of bloodbending to understand its application, despite never having used the forbidden skill. She asked Tarrlok why he didn't use it during a full moon. During her waterbending training, Korra was also taught the advanced skill of healing. Because Katara was considered the world's greatest healer, Korra mastered the art herself and was proud of her accomplishments. Using a small amount of water as a catalyst, Korra could significantly accelerate the healing of wounds. Korra's abilities were so great that she was able to quickly relieve the pain in Bolin's wounded arm and heal the severe burns on General Iroh's arm without leaving a trace. Despite having only briefly studied with her uncle Unalaq, an expert in spirits, Korra mastered his spirit control technique, which involves transforming negative energy into positive energy to pacify spirits. At first, Korra only managed to understand the mechanics of the process, but she eventually successfully applied the technique and calmed numerous minor spirits at once. She was even able to use it to destroy Unalaq and purify the dark spirit Vaatu when they merged into the Dark Avatar. After her uncle's death, Korra became the only known living user of this skill. Korra's earthbending aptitude also manifested at an early age. After years of intensive training, Korra mastered the art to perfection. In combat, she regularly employed traditional earthbending tactics, but quickly mastered the basics of professional earthbending under Bolin's tutelage and learned to attack like a firebender, using subtle movements and quick thrusts. Her mastery was so great that she could easily capture targets levitated by other earthbenders. She demonstrated her honed earthbending skills and abilities several times, most notably by hurling one of the Triple Threat members several stories high.

Korra's earthbending also allowed her to affect a wide area, upending and destroying everything around her. As we saw with Bolin, Korra could effectively synchronize her earthbending with that of another person to increase her versatility and target accuracy. She could levitate boulders by controlling their movement and launch them at high speeds, create fissures or rock pillars in the ground, or fly several meters, summoning enormous earth pillars beneath her. When Korra was living in Zaofu, Suyin Beifong offered to teach her the art of metalbending. Suyin began by giving Korra a meteorite to practice on, and Korra quickly became comfortable with her metal body and learned to shape it into various forms. Thus, she became the first Avatar to master metalbending. Korra quickly mastered metalbending and could now deftly and fluidly manipulate metal cables, entangling her opponents, including experienced metalbenders. She could also break through a large, thick metal wall blocking her path, albeit with some difficulty. As with earth and water, Korra demonstrated aptitude for firebending at a young age. Because she tended to resort to aggressive maneuvers in stressful situations, Korra frequently used firebending in combat. Her firebending training under Master Yim culminated when, at seventeen, she passed the exam with flying colors, mastering various advanced techniques such as firebending. In combat with other firebenders, she could easily deflect and disperse enemy attacks. She was so proficient in firebending that she could create small but powerful flames in her fingers and sustain them to melt metal chains. She could also create a dagger in each hand for close-quarters combat and use her firebending to propel herself through the air in short bursts, using these bursts to run along a wall.

Unlike the usual difficulties the Avatar faces when mastering an element opposite their own, firebending came naturally to Korra. Korra resorted to firebending when provoked, frustrated, or trying to assert her dominance, such as the time she set fire to a newspaper cutout of Lin after failing to do so with airbending. Tenzin attributed this unusual combination to her natural qualities, which made her uniquely suited to the art, thanks to her natural drive and fiery nature. Unlike the previous three elements, airbending came more easily to Korra. Tenzin explained that this was because airbending was the most at odds with her personality. At first, Korra struggled to master the fighting style and tactics of airbending, but during her first professional match, she was able to use basic airbending moves to evade the opposing team's attacks and ultimately wear them down, securing her team's victory. As she trained, her understanding of the techniques improved significantly, allowing her to quickly and gracefully navigate through gates and eventually master all physical maneuvers; she later used this tactic against the lieutenant, successfully evading all of his attacks.

After Amon severed Korra's connection to the first three elements and plotted to take Mako's firebending, Korra's emotional distress allowed her to fully embrace airbending. Despite knowing only the theory and practice of airbending, Korra demonstrated considerable skill and strength, creating air currents with her punches and kicks that were powerful enough to throw Amon several meters and slam him into a window. While she demonstrated incredible offensive airbending power, her style was very different from other airbenders. She used linear attack movements similar to firebenders, and rarely used the more characteristic circular and spiraling movements. Six months after the Anti-Bending Revolution, she had nearly mastered the art, mastering traditional maneuvers like gliding and several advanced skills, such as piloting an air scooter. Over time, she began using the glider both as a means of transportation and as a way to enhance her airbending in combat. Under Jinora's guidance, Korra learned to separate her spirit into an astral form and travel to the Spirit World through meditation. In the following years, Korra perfected her airbending skills, learning to create a bubble of air around a person's head to provide oxygen and protect them from toxic gases. Eventually, air became the second most popular element in Korra's arsenal, and she became so confident in her abilities that she began teaching airbending to other benders. Connecting with his past lives for the first time, Avatar Aang restored Korra's bending abilities and imbued her with knowledge of energybending. Although Korra herself never used airbending, she could freely restore the bending abilities of others, as she did with Lin Beifong's earthbending.

After the Anti-Bending Revolution, Korra actively used energybending to restore bending ability to those benders Amon had stripped of their abilities with his "bending cutoff" technique, with the exception of those who used bending for criminal purposes, such as Shady Shin. Korra also mastered energy manipulation to connect with her inner spirit, accessing the cosmic energy of the universe and creating a gigantic astral projection of herself. In this form, she could project energy blasts from her chest that were capable of overwhelming the Dark Avatar in direct contact. Despite being separated from her physical body, Korra retained the ability to manipulate water. After Raava informed her that in the Spirit World she was connected to all spiritual energy, Korra realized she could manipulate this energy with or without her physical body. Thus, she was able to release souls from their vegetative cocoons after meditating in the Spirit World and redirect a beam charged with spiritual energy into the physical world. In addition to bending, Korra possessed considerable physical strength. Thanks to her impressive natural strength, she could easily lift Tenzin and his children simultaneously, or an adult man with one hand. Furthermore, she could leap long distances and tall obstacles from a standing start, and traverse various terrain and vertical surfaces with great speed, easily climbing and descending from rooftops. She could slam a much larger and heavier opponent into a pile of pipes with such force that it broke, and shatter large chunks of ice flying at her with a single blow. She could also swim across large bodies of water.

Korra was quite fast and agile, with excellent reflexes, allowing her to easily dodge attacks from a much larger opponent in a confined space or a metalbender's zipline at close range. Her agility and balance were also excellent, allowing her to deftly dodge numerous projectiles with minimal damage, which aided her in combat. She possessed impressive acrobatic skills, akin to parkour and freerunning: she could glide across surfaces with excellent control, perform somersaults and spins in midair, and even run and leap from one wall to another. She was quite flexible, able to twist and turn to attack from different angles or squeeze through tight spaces. Korra could also be very precise in her attacks, incapacitating several experienced waterbenders from the South without causing them serious injury. Korra was also a skilled unarmed fighter, capable of knocking out an opponent with a single blow, while simultaneously dodging attacks and striking their legs, and once incapacitating a man using only Mako's scarf. Even when facing a warrior as skilled as the Lieutenant, Korra skillfully parried his attacks and countered in close combat. She also used a combination of magical attacks to create openings in his defenses and deliver powerful physical blows, ultimately winning the fight. Even without her powers, she was able to defeat several chi-blockers before being rescued by Naga. Korra also possessed a keen sense of security under pressure, demonstrating excellent tactical skills and the ability to evade danger. For example, she used her armband as an insulator against the Lieutenant's electrical discharge and feigned unconsciousness to catch the Equalists off guard. Moreover, she was very resilient and was one of the few who managed to free herself from the grip, albeit with difficulty.

Korra was also a skilled public speaker. Initially, she was nervous when she had to speak at her first press conference in Republic City. During the gala, Korra gave in to her brashness when confronted by a group of reporters, and she thoughtlessly threatened Amon to hide her fear of him. Over time, Korra became more confident and collected when speaking in public, and began to consider her words before speaking. This manifested itself when she declared the independence of the Southern Water Tribe and decided to keep the spirit portals open. Having lived at the South Pole her entire life, and her primary mode of transportation was a naga, Korra had not learned to drive before coming to Republic City. She gradually learned under Asami's tutelage, though she still gets confused between the clutch and the brake. Korra also knew how to operate a speedboat and a snowmobile. Korra was a skilled craftsman and personally created the saddle that her mount Naga uses to carry riders.
