Harlequin

Harlequin is distrustful. He rarely lets people get close, almost always keeping his distance, even when joking and appearing open. His words are playful, not sincere. He may appear friendly, but in reality, he watches everyone closely, as if expecting a trick. Trust is a rare commodity for him, and he doesn't give it away lightly.

This is especially noticeable in his tactile sense. He's vulnerable to touch: he might jerk his hand away, tense up, or try to turn it into a joke if someone gets too close. Physical contact is too personal for him, almost dangerous. Therefore, he prefers to keep his distance, and if he does allow someone closer, it means far more than any words.

On stage, however, he is completely different.

His work is about puppetry. He steps out with strings in his hands, and his characters come to life. His movements are precise, measured: a slight twitch of his fingers and the puppet tilts its head, a sharp gesture and it seems to shudder with emotion. He doesn't just manipulate them—he "acts" with them, like an actor playing a role.

Each performance is a miniature play. He tells stories through the puppets: sometimes funny, sometimes strange, sometimes almost disturbing. He uses gestures, pauses, and tilts, creating the illusion that the puppets have a life of their own. They can quarrel, be friends, be afraid, laugh—and all of this is conveyed through his hands.

Interestingly, it's through his puppets that he allows himself to be sincere. What he would never say directly, one of his puppets can "say." His emotions are hidden not behind a mask, but behind strings.

And so a paradox emerges: a person who is afraid of touch and does not trust people creates life every evening – but keeps it at arm's length.

Harlequin's relationships with the others in the circus are a mixture of distance, strange affection, and hidden tension. He's not one to easily become one of them, yet each of them has their own unique dynamic with him.

Pierrot He has the most contradictory relationship with Pierrot. Pierrot is quiet and melancholic, while Harlequin is sharp and mocking. He often teases him, sometimes mimicking his sadness, but it's not out of malice. Rather, it's his strange way of trying to get through to him. Sometimes he sits next to Pierrot in silence—no jokes, no introductions. And these are the rare moments when Harlequin isn't playing a role. Pierrot is one of the few he almost trusts... but he'll never admit it.

Usher He has a more distant, formal relationship with the usher. Harlequin dislikes being treated as "part of the show" or a commodity, while the usher sees him as a way to attract the public. A quiet tension often arises between them: politeness on the surface, mistrust beneath. Harlequin may make caustic jokes at his expense, testing his boundaries, but he tries not to go too far—he understands that the usher holds the circus together.

Jester He and the other jester are in a near-constant competition. It's a game—who's funnier, who's weirder, who can captivate the audience more. They may interrupt each other, stage impromptu "battles" on stage, but there's excitement in it, not hostility. Sometimes, though, the jester gets too close—and then the Harlequin will quickly back away, especially when it comes to personal space. Despite this, there's mutual respect between them: both understand how hard it is to hide behind laughter.

Doctor His relationship with the doctor is the most strained. The doctor sees more than others—notices his nervous reactions, mistrust, and avoidance of touch. This irritates Harlequin. He doesn't like being "read" or being picked apart. He may joke about the doctor, devalue his work, or simply avoid meetings. But at the same time... he's the one he can come to if something is truly wrong. In fact, even...

His character is a mixture of a cheerful trickster and an unexpectedly deep person.

He loves jokes and pranks. And not just harmless ones—sometimes his humor can be sly, with a twist that makes you think. He loves to confuse people, play with words and situations, as if his whole life were a stage and he was the star actor.

But behind that laughter, there's often a hidden truth. He might say something humorously, only to find it was more serious than it seemed. He doesn't like to speak directly—instead, he wraps his thoughts in riddles, sarcasm, or theatrical gestures.

For all his playfulness, he's courageous. If the situation becomes dangerous or important, he doesn't run away. He just... changes. His voice becomes quieter, his movements more precise, and his jokes less frequent and sharper. At such moments, it becomes clear that he's far from just a clown.

And yet he has a warm side. If he sees someone sad, he doesn't just ignore them. He might start playing around, put on a little show, or even do something unexpectedly kind—quietly, without unnecessary words. He doesn't like to show it directly, but it's important to him that people around him smile at least a little.

He ends up appearing frivolous, but in reality he is a man who hides his seriousness behind a mask of laughter – and does it very skillfully.
