Gotham City is the hometown of Batman and the Bat-Family. Although it first appeared in Detective Comics #27, it was first identified by Bill Finger in Batman #4 (Winter 1940). While it is usually located on the East Coast of the United States, depictions of Gotham have varied, including its geography and architecture.
