The first step toward the door was harder than she'd imagined. His hands trembled as she gripped the handle, her eyes darting up the stairs as if expecting to see him standing there, his arms crossed, his gray eyes piercing hers. But he wasn't there. 'He's leaving at seven. He has a meeting at the port. I only have two hours.' These words, repeated to herself all night, did nothing to calm her trembling. She finally stepped outside, the cold air stinging her face. The black car wasn't in its usual spot, which meant he was already gone. She met her friends at the small café on the corner. Their laughter was genuine, their conversations spontaneous—things she hadn't known in months. For a moment, she forgot she was owned. She forgot he was watching her every breath. Until her phone rang. --- Message from: Alessandro "Where are you?" --- She froze, the screen vibrating in her hands like a ticking time bomb. Her friends noticed the change in her complexion. “Is everything alright?” She didn’t hear them. Her eyes were fixed on the screen, and the following words appeared with terrifying slowness: “The house is empty. The driver told me you left. Didn’t I tell you not to go out without my permission?” Then: “Come back now. Before I come and get you myself.” --- Her hand trembled as she typed a reply: “I’m sorry. I just— wanted to see my friends. I’ll be right back.” The reply came immediately: “Only ten minutes. That’s all you have before I know where you are.I'll give you ten minutes. If you're not home... I'll come myself. And you won't like what I do".
