Bishamonten originates from the ancient Indian deity Kubera (or Vaisravana), a god of wealth and king of yakshas, who was incorporated into Buddhism as a guardian of the north. Known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitenno) and among the Seven Lucky Gods, he was transmitted through China to Japan in the 6th century, evolving into a patron of warriors and a protector against evil.
