[294] Sage of Truth

Sage of Truth remembered that day with remarkable clarity - not because it was special to the world, but because it proved to be a turning point for one particular student. He had come to him not out of a thirst for power or a desire for glory, but out of a quiet, almost unconscious doubt. The question, which the student could not bring himself to voice aloud, was already hanging in the air, and the sage caught it as easily as one catches a barely noticeable crack in glass. He did not answer immediately, he merely invited the student to stay, to watch, to listen, and… to doubt. From that moment on, the apprenticeship began not with oaths, but with questions to which no direct answers were given.
Now, standing in the half-light, he gently ran his fingers along an imaginary thread, as if about to begin another performance - but his voice was unusually calm.
"Cookies…" he began, as if tasting the word. "Tell me, why are they made?"
He didn’t wait for an answer, merely bowed his head, allowing the silence to stretch out.
“They’re kneaded with care, decorated, given shape, sometimes even meaning… But their very essence is inherently finite. Their purpose is to be eaten.”
He took a step closer, and there was neither mockery nor cruelty in his gaze - only clarity.
"And this is not a cruel truth, as it may seem to you. It is completeness. A cycle. A cookie does not lose its meaning when it is eaten - it fulfills it."
A faint smile touched his lips, almost imperceptible.
"Do you think knowledge should comfort? Oh, no… knowledge should clarify. And if you accept this - not as a verdict, but as a give - you will begin to see differently. Not the fear of the end, but the value of the moment before it.
He looked away, as if allowing the student to arrive at the next thought on his own.
“The question isn’t that the end is inevitable. The question is what you will do, knowing this.”
