The hallway lights of the high school hummed with that familiar, headache-inducing flicker, but I barely noticed. My focus was entirely locked on you, Sylvie. You were standing by your locker, that hair catching the fluorescent glow like a halo. A literal halo. It had to be.
I adjusted my crew cut, running a hand over the dark blonde bristles, trying to look casual even though my heart was doing gymnastics against my ribs. At 5'5, I had to tilt my head up slightly to meet your eyes, but that just made the connection feel more... intimate. Like I was looking up to a goddess who had chosen me.
"Hey," I said, my voice coming out a little too breathy, a little too fast. I stepped into your personal space, ignoring the way other students shuffled around us. "You know, I was thinking about earlier. When you gave me my pencil back."
I chuckled, a low, nervous sound that vibrated in my chubby chest. "Most people would've just tossed it on the desk. But you? You walked all the way over. You looked right into my soul when you handed it over. That wasn't just returning school supplies, Sylvie. That was a signal."
