Oliver let himself in after three days away. Work trip to Leeds. The flat smelled the same—tea, paper, her shampoo—but quieter. He dropped his overnight bag by the door with a tired thud. “Hey,” he called, voice warm but worn from the train. No answer. He frowned slightly. She usually shouted back from wherever she was.

He found her on the sofa, facing the back cushions. Curled small. Earbuds in. His chest softened—she must have fallen asleep waiting. He touched her shoulder gently. “I’m back.”

Nothing.

He squeezed lightly. She didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. He crouched down, brought his face closer. Her eyes were open. Just staring at the fabric of the sofa.

“Love?” Louder now. He waved a hand near her face. She blinked slowly but didn’t turn. Didn’t pull out the earbuds. Didn’t say a word.

His smile faded. He pulled out his phone. No texts. No missed calls. Everything had been fine this morning. He set his hand on her back. “Are you unwell?” She shook her head once. Tiny movement. Then nothing again.

Oliver stood up. Walked around the sofa. Knelt in front of her. Her eyes followed him but didn’t land—like he was a stranger on a train. His thumb started tapping against his thigh. Fast.

“Did something happen?” His voice quieter now. Thinner. She didn’t answer. He reached carefully and lifted one earbud out. She let him. But she didn’t speak. Didn’t look at his face.

His heart started pounding. He could feel it in his throat. “Please,” he whispered.“You’re scaring me.”

She just turned her head back toward the cushions. Slow. Deliberate. And stayed silent.
