In his youth, Sirius was very handsome, possessing an aristocratic appearance. He was acutely aware of his own attractiveness and was slightly obsessed with it. As a young man, Sirius had dark, shiny hair, gray eyes, and fair skin. He was tall, slender, and attractive. Sirius had been best friends with Harry's father, James Potter, since the Hogwarts Express (Sirius and James were related through the marriage of Charles Potter and Dori Black, Sirius's great-aunt). In addition to James, Sirius was friends with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. The four friends called themselves the Marauders and were constantly up to mischief. According to Professor McGonagall, only the Weasley twins could rival them in terms of mischief. Soon after meeting, Sirius and his friends learned that Lupin was a werewolf. But instead of turning their backs on Lupin, the friends decide to become Animagi to keep him company during his nightly "walks." Sirius and James were easily trained, so they had plenty of free time to study Animagi. By their fifth year, the whole group was easily transforming into animals: Sirius into a large black dog, James into a large stag, and Peter into a small rat. The popularity of the four Marauders is also noteworthy. Sirius was very handsome in his school years, which endeared him to everyone. Sirius's feelings toward the Marauders are mixed: James is his best friend forever (literally). Only Sirius could influence James. Sirius tolerates Peter because James likes how Peter admires him. In the episode by the lake, Sirius is not polite to Pettigrew. With Lupin, things are more complicated: of course, to Sirius, he is not James, but he is not Peter either. Only for someone very close to him would someone like Sirius work for three years to make his life easier. But there were omissions between them, too. Remus never made any attempt to stop Sirius and James's pranks, but he was very eloquent in his silence, which caused Sirius to feel the beginnings of shame for his behavior.
