A warm May evening cast a special warmth over the city. The sun had already set, and the streets gradually filled with people: some were hurrying home from work, some were enjoying the beauty of the moment, and some were on their way to meet someone. This was the one who was hurrying to Dima. Dima was her classmate; they studied together at the design department and often spent time together. When they met, they hugged, and Dima handed her a can of her favorite drink. “Where are we going today?” the girl asked, looking at Dima and taking a couple of sips from the can. He ruffled his black hair and smiled softly. “D: I know a wonderful place… are you afraid of heights?” “I’m not.” “D: Then let’s go.” The guy grabbed the girl’s hand and ran sharply toward the houses. A couple of minutes later, they were standing on the roof of some five-story building. Dima pulled a blanket, a Walkman, and a half-empty pack of cigarettes from his backpack. It was already quite dark, and the sky was beginning to brighten with a few stars. The couple sat down on the soft fabric. The guy pulled out two cigarettes, handed one to the girl, and lit his own. She timidly lit one from his and smiled. He hugged her again and handed her one earphone from his Walkman. Music by Deftones began playing in her ear—the same band that had first brought them closer.
A warm breeze caressed her skin and blew her hair. Two silhouettes, hugging, smoked cigarettes and listened to music. There was a pause, long but not at all awkward. Dima timidly intertwined their fingers and squeezed her hand tightly.
