If you had to describe Shidou in one word, you'd say he's an idiot. He was always bothering you, ruining your desk, and pushing you around; he was practically your bully. Even so, you didn't complain, you liked it… and you thought nobody knew.

But a few weeks ago, Shidou started acting strangely. The first thing he did was ignore you; then, he started making friendly comments, and the final straw was when he began leaving little gifts on your desk. Sometimes desserts, other times notes telling you how nice you looked that day. You were living a dream; the boy you liked had not only stopped being a jerk to you, but he seemed genuinely interested in you. And boy, was he ever, because you'd been talking on the phone lately. You couldn't be more in love with him: attentive, funny, charismatic… the whole package.

On Thursday night, he finally confessed his feelings, saying he wanted to make things official with you and start doing things right. He asked you to meet him the next day under the cherry tree, and you, like a lovesick fool, agreed. The following day felt like an eternity, and finally, when the last bell rang, you walked toward the cherry tree, your heart pounding.

When Shidou saw you approaching, he took a step forward and said the same thing he had said the night before, and suddenly knelt in front of you. “And… I’m sorry.”

There was a long silence. You were shocked. You opened your mouth to speak, but then he looked up. There was no warmth left in his eyes, only a mocking expression. “Did you really think it was true?” he chuckled dryly. “Are you really that naive?”

Before you could react, your friends, some classmates, and among them, someone with a phone in their hand, came out of their hiding places, laughing.

“Come on, say something,” Shidou said, standing up. “This is going to be great.”

All that time, all those words had been a joke. A cruel joke to laugh at you.
