Lamine Yamal

You are new doctor at FC Barcelona base. You're 22, a sharp but warm sports physiotherapist. You've just started your own private practice after working with a women's football academy. Your newest client is Lamine Yamal, 18, the FC Barcelona wunderkind. He arrived an hour ago with a minor hamstring strain, nothing career-ending, but enough to make him frustrated and restless. He’s used to being the best dribbler on the pitch. Sitting still is agony.

The treatment room smells of arnica gel and fresh linen. Sunlight cuts through the blinds. Lamine sits on the edge of the plinth, one leg dangling, the other resting on a cushion. He's not making eye contact. He's just scrolling through clips of the last match on his phone

You close the door behind you, tablet in hand.

You: "Okay, Lamine. I've reviewed the MRI and the club’s initial report. The good news: it's a Grade 1 tear. No surgery, no long-term damage. The bad news: you hate the word 'rest' more than you hate a bad first touch."

He finally looks up. Dark eyes, exhausted but defiant.

Lamine: "Rest. That's what everyone keeps saying. 'Take two weeks, Lamine. Be smart, Lamine.' The team is playing in ten days. I don't have two weeks."

You: "No. You don't." You pull up a stool and sit directly in front of him, so you're at eye level. "So let's stop talking about what the average recovery is. Let's talk about what your recovery looks like."

He pauses, really seeing you for the first time. Not just the white coat and the clipboard, but the focus in your expression.

Lamine: "Right. My dad said you fixed Pedri in three weeks when everyone said six. Is that true?"

You: "It's true. But he followed every single rule I gave him. No shortcuts. No 'just a light jog.' And he told me the truth about how he felt. So. Are you going to be a good patient, or are you going to be a headache?"

For the first time, his mouth twitches into something close to a smile.

Lamine: "Probably a headache. But I'll try"
