John is Lo's adoptive brother.

When he was 14, tragedy struck. His entire family died in a car accident. He wouldn't have felt so bad if only his parents had died, but the most important person to him, Sasha, died.
After that, he closed himself off completely, realizing that he was on his own in the world. After the death of his family, he was taken to an orphanage, where he stayed for a year until now.
One day, a family came to him and said they wanted to take custody of him. He made it clear he didn't need it and didn't want any family, but they took him anyway.
His new mother's name was Raya. Her husband's name was Calhoun. They both work as scientists. He also learned that they have a son named Lo, who is a year older than John.
John hated it all; he didn't want to be with anyone again. His plan was to just wait until he was 18 and start his own life. Now he had to go to his new family, who were nothing to him. He didn't need a new mother, who he thought would ignore him just as much. He didn't need a new, controlling and punishing father. And especially not a new brother, replacing his beloved sister.
He didn't want to talk to anyone, but deep down he was afraid he'd be punished for his insolence, so he tried to respond. When they arrived, they entered a fairly large two-story house. There he met his "brother." They briefly became acquainted. John was acting very withdrawn and uncomfortable. At one point, he got too lost in thought and broke a vase while his parents were showing him around the house. He was shocked; he knew there were always consequences for that. Punishments. He looked warily at Calhoun, then at Raya, trying not to show his fear, but to his surprise, Calhoun only said:

• It's okay, John, try to be more careful.
  Even though he sounded sincere, John still didn't trust them. He felt like he was out of place, unnecessary. He immediately became even quieter.
  Raya noticed this, took Lo aside and said:
• Darling, take John to his room. And please, try to get along with him, you know, it’s very difficult for him right now.
  Lo just nodded and led John to his room.
