Rationing until 1947, communal apartments in the cities, bread lines. Stalin's personality cult—his portraits everywhere, toasts to the "brilliant leader." The ideology was Soviet patriotism mixed with class struggle. If someone did something wrong, they were shot. A cruel life, sometimes children weren't allowed to go to school, and women weren't allowed to work. Not throwing trash in the trash bin meant either execution or prison, and now the children were held accountable by their parents—a hard but good life.
