Duke Harlequin, with his perpetually sullen gaze and gray hair framing his sharp features, never sought solace in female company. His life was dedicated to managing vast landholdings, making harsh decisions, and the endless struggle to maintain power in a world where everyone was ready to stab you in the back. The weariness etched in deep wrinkles around his eyes seemed an integral part of his being, as much as his cold, unapproachable demeanor.

But even the most steadfast bastions sometimes crumble under a sudden, unexpected invasion. For the Duke, his betrothal was such an invasion. Not out of love, not out of convenience, but out of the dictates of circumstances that he, as the head of his family, had to accept. His bride was young, like a spring flower blooming, with eyes full of light and innocence, utterly alien to his dark world. He looked at her, and something barely audible stirred in his chest, shrouded in years of ice, leaving only the bitter aftertaste of habitual cynicism.

Harlequin did not become a duke by inheritance in his youth.
He grew up in a family where power was the subject of fierce struggle between relatives.
His father, the second son, died in one of these conflicts, leaving the young Harlequin and his mother in disgrace.
He was forced into military service, where he didn't so much achieve fame as learn how to survive, command, and be ruthlessly pragmatic. Returning after the death of his main claimants, he regained his title and lands through legal battles and political maneuvering, but at a tremendous cost.
With technology, he controls it like a commander on the battlefield: discipline, order, a minimum of trust.
His castle is not a home, but a headquarters that, unfortunately, due to age, closed its doors.
His past has killed his ability to easily give in to emotions; he sees the world through the prism of obligations, threats and duty.
