Blu & Jewel!?

Blu is first seen sleeping as a young hatchling in an empty nest in a tree hollow. Awakened by the singing of his fellow birds in the rainforest near Rio de Janeiro, Blu dances along with them. During the song, he watches a female Golden Conure attempting to teach her chicks how to fly for the first time, and thinks of flying for himself — until smugglers start capturing the other birds. During the chaos, Blu, distracted slips out of the tree. During the fall, he makes a vain attempt to fly, but fails to do so and is also captured.In Rio, Tulio speculated that Blu was the last male of his kind, the Spix's Macaw. He is shy and socially awkward and is definitely the opposite of his mate Jewel. While he can log into a computer, open birdcages and use a skateboard and much more he had one major setback: He was unable to fly. When he met Jewel and fell in love with her, he was forced to put his fears aside and find out if he really had what it took to soar.Alongside other captured birds, Blu is caged, put on a plane, and almost brought to an exotic bird store to be sold. On the way, the back of the truck carrying him is forced open (due to the driver not paying attention to the traffic light), and the crate containing Blu falls onto the streets of Moose Lake, Minnesota. A young girl named Linda Gunderson finds the crate and promptly comforts the scared chick and promises to take care of him, later naming him Blu.

Jewel is initially fiercely independent, with a love of freedom. She has a funky attitude and thinks more about escaping and flying than anything else. She is very distrustful of humans probably because she lost her family, which was strongly proven when she badly scratched one of Tulio's assistants in his aviary, and doesn't think much of the "pet" bird Blu. After their duet at the Samba Club, however, she warms up to Blu considerably. When he jumps out of the smugglers' plane after her, she is touched to the point of kissing him passionately. With encouragement from Blu, she seems to overcome her distrust of humans, allowing Tulio to tend to her injury.She loves to fly, cherishes her freedom, and would never look into a cage, let alone fly into one. When she finds herself stuck with a domesticated "pet", she learns that being grounded may not be so bad after all. Eventually, she learns to be more trustful towards humans, as shown when she lets Tulio tend to her wing at the end of the first movie. She is Blu's mate, Carla, Bia, and Tiago's mother, Eduardo's daughter, Roberto's friend, and Mimi's niece.

Tiago is first seen helping Carla and Bia prepare fireworks at New Year's Eve, the three having tied their babysitter Tiny to a firework. He says that the show is going to be "awesome". After Carla details her "vision" for the fireworks (colors), Tiago impatiently grabs the match from Bia and lights it after he shares his own "vision" (explosions). Before Tiago can light the fireworks, he is stopped by Blu and Jewel just as he dashes for the fireworks' fuses; Jewel grabs him by his tail, and Blu takes away the lit match. He nods in agreement when Carla claims Blu always says "no". When Blu protests that he doesn't always say "no", Tiago says that he is "in denial".In the birdhouse at breakfast a few days later, Tiago steals the blueberries intended for the pancakes, kicking them at Blu as a game. After the first volley of blueberries, Tiago sends multiple volleys flying in Blu's direction rapidly, causing Blu to accidentally knock over a pan, sending a pancake flying. Tiago tries to catch it but was instead squashed against the wall. He greets his mother as she stares at them, clearly annoyed. Jewel tells Blu that she wants to show the kids how to open a Brazil nut she found in the rainforest near Rio de Janeiro, but Tiago further annoys Jewel when he opens a can of shelled Brazil nuts, claiming that their father had "already showed [them]!".

Bia is first seen helping her brother and sister set up fireworks, showing her calculations in the soil. She is confident that the fireworks will go off to the beat of the music but then doubts her work, saying that she possibly "didn't carry the one". She is briefly annoyed when Tiago snatches the match from her. Blu and Jewel then show up, with Blu telling them it is dangerous for them to play with fireworks while unsupervised. Bia tells her parents that they asked for Tiny's permission, but Blu said that "that was even worse". As Blu's tail catches fire, he repeatedly says "no", leading Bia to say that that is his "27th 'no' today". As the fireworks go off, Bia watches with an expression of awe and wonder.Before embarking on their journey to the Amazon, she informs Blu about snakes that can "swallow you whole" in the Amazon, scaring him with a pop-up snake from her Amazon book. She brings the book with her to the Amazon, enjoying the journey. Bia sees many of the creatures she had read about in her books in real life, one of which is the "Prismatic" butterfly during one of their stops during the journey and is overjoyed with the experience. Once they arrive at the Amazon, Bia remarks on Heliconius larva about to enter its pupa stage. Tiago laughs, thinking she said "poop" instead of "pupa". Bia says it's pupa and calls him a "birdbrain", and chases after him. She and the others are then picked up by some disguised Spix's macaws and deposited in their sanctuary.

Carla helps her siblings prepare fireworks for the New Year's Eve celebrations, envisioning the colors and the sequence that would play along the best. When their parents show up and tell them not to play with fireworks, she agrees with her siblings that Blu always says no, even saying that Jewel is becoming just like him. Carla later flies up to the Christ the Redeemer statue with her family, watching the fireworks in awe and wonder.Sometime later, Carla is in the kitchen of Linda and Tulio's house with her siblings, spraying whipped cream on her pancakes. When Blu kicks a blueberry into it, she cheers with Bia. As Jewel arrives, looking on with disapproval, Carla busies herself by listening to her iPod and watching TV with Bia. Carla then excitedly points out to her parents that they are on the TV, exclaiming that they are famous. When Jewel complains how the kids are being raised too human-like, she takes out one of the buds from Carla's iPod, to her annoyance. When Blu considers Jewel's suggestion to go to the Amazon, Carla remarks that he didn't say no, which was then backed by Bia.
