Cleaners
The Cleaners are an organization located on the Ground that was founded approximately 150 years ago.[1] Since it was established, the group has grown enough to have branches in multiple wards. Between combatants, sentinels, and supporters, The Cleaners have about 100 members in total.[2] While respected for their work, many people on the ground look down upon The Cleaners for their reliance upon Vital Instruments.[3]
The organization is dedicated to protecting the safe zones of the Ground from Trash Beasts formed in polluted zones. They are a public organization, and regularly receive calls from the inhabitants of the Ground requesting Cleaners to come "clean up" trash beasts which either could cause or already are causing issues. The group are acquaintances of the Hell Guard and are required to report to them if any third parties are harmed by a Trash Beast that they’ve taken responsibility for.[4]
Aside from their public-facing activities, internally The Cleaners have a secret goal that’s only known to a small handful within the group; the true reason that the organization was formed was in order to solve the mysteries of the world.[5] Joining
To become a Cleaner as a Giver, the method that has been seen throughout the story so far is being scouted; the Giver has to be noteworthy enough to catch a current Captain's eye, and when in agreement, they must make their way to the Cleaner's HQ where the Giver then has to be screened by the Cleaners' receptionist, Semiu Grier, and then approved by the boss himself, Arkha Corvus. On the occasion the boss is not present, it's unknown what happens to the potential recruit, but in Rudo's case, he is taken on an "observational field trip" for he's now a "trainee".
The Ground
At least 150 years ago, a large number of humans left for the sky with the Sphere, leaving the rest of humanity on the ground. Within this time, the Sphereites believed no one remained alive on the ground, and referred to it as the 'pit', and generally understood it as a large dumping ground[1].
Within the 150 years, the garbage that was dumped by sphere onto the ground eventually formed into Trash Beasts[2]. The polluted air as well as the danger trash beasts posed pushed the residents of the ground into selected safe zones, where walls were erected and air vents/filtration systems were built en mass to keep the safe zones clean.
The level of pollution changed much of the grounds environment. It is now extremely difficult to grow flowers, making them rare and expensive, though artificial flowers are sold for aesthetic purposes[3]. Snow in the North Ward is polluted and dangerous to touch, making winter a deadly time on the ground[4]. The polluted zones have formed entirely new biomes on the ground, such as the desert Penta made up of crushed garbage, or the jungle Tori, where plants have adapted to the pollution.
The Sphere
The Sphere is a mobile island suspended high up in the sky through unknown methods, and knowledge of how to get to it is unknown. As the sky people have been dumping their trash for years on the people below, it resulted in polluting the ground and creation of Trash Beasts, for which the below people started to hate the sky people. Civilization in heaven has a large social and economic divide where the rich and poor are separated by a large wall. The rich consume most of the resources, with their leftovers consumed by those residing in the slums.
Givers
Vital instruments are powered by Thought (思念, Shinen) which is a mysterious power source in the Ground. “Thought” accumulates and turns into energy, an anima that causes various phenomena, Thought accumulating in objects is one of those phenomena. The origin of givers is unknown. Scientists on the ground hypothesise it is due to 'human potential', however Mymo, through endless research, has concluded that givers are the result of energy left behind The Ancient Rulers, who's energy quickened human evolution giving birth to givers.
Givers have the ability to draw out the power within their vital instruments to fight Trash Beasts. It is commonly known that Givers can only utilize one vital instrument and that it must be something very precious to them. Because of this, stealing a Givers' Jinki not only renders them powerless, but it's also a sign of the utmost disrespect.
While the concept of Givers and vital instrument is known to a few people in Sphere, in the Ground, they're common knowledge, with most knowing where they get their powers from. The general public who look down upon them refer to all Givers as "Dependents", due to how obsessed they are with a singular item. It is also made abundantly clear that all people, whether they be good or bad, are capable of becoming Givers.
Givers are able to control how well they handle a vital instrument, as it's said Zanka Nijiku is the best handler there is.
Vital Instruments
Vital instruments are powered by Anima (思念, Shinen) which is a mysterious power source on the Ground, Anima accumulates and turns into energy and causes various phenomena, Vital Instruments being one of these phenomena.[1] Vital Instrument users are called Givers because they give off anima energy to objects which causes them to awaken.[2]
Awakening
Before becoming a Giver the user has to transform into one by learning to give off Anima, this is usually done by pouring their love and care into an object but this process can be sped up by another Giver supplying Anima Energy to someone else by acting as a catalyst to trigger their awakening, this however only works for those who’ve already built a foundation to be a Giver by using the former method.[2] The only known way of this method being used is through the Watchman Series item 3R.[2]
Trivia
Likes: Tobacco, people who fiercely battle with all they’ve got,[19] hot women Dislikes: Rain, childish and annoying women (he can't stand them),[20] needy women and children In a popularity poll hosted by Kodansha's K Manga app, Enjin got second place with 1,049 votes. According to Kei Urana, Enjin's body odor smells like tobacco, but has a whiff of perfume underneath it.[21] On days off, Enjin hangs out with Gris Rubion and Bro Santa, goes out into the city at night, or sometimes goes off somewhere on his own. Besides Enjin, everyone else tends to be by themselves, but Enjin sometimes takes everyone out to have some fun together.
His Vital Instrument
Umbreaker: Enjin’s weapon is an umbrella that can be used as a shield, to float in the air, and he can also spin it at high speeds to act as a drill.
Appearance
Enjin is a tall and muscular man with spiky blond hair that is styled with a sharp brown fade, complementing his striking yellow eyes and white pupils. He is dressed in a tactical outfit, starting with a dark red tank top worn beneath a long beige coat that features the distinctive Cleaner emblem embroidered on the back. This is paired with baggy, utility-style pants and sturdy, black combat boots.
His features are further defined by his accessories and markings. He has thick ear tunnels and two hoop piercings on each ear. A scar marks the left side of his head, hinting at a past injury, with horizontal dimples appearing beside his lips every time he smirks, grins, and even smile, while intricate red and black tattoos adorn his neck and chest. Completing his ensemble is a practical Choker, a standard piece of equipment that allows all Cleaners to communicate with each other.
Personality
Enjin presents himself as a man of relaxed confidence, possessing a bright and amiable personality that belies his serious abilities. Despite his remarkable talents, he remains grounded and humble, often introducing himself with the self-effacing title of an "average Cleaner". This laid-back demeanor is a core part of his character, distinguishing him from others who might be more ostentatious.
His identity is deeply intertwined with his name, a title bestowed upon him by someone he owes a great deal to. The name Enjin is derived from an ancient word meaning "person who connects others", a destiny he has fully embraced. He takes immense pride in this designation, viewing it as a responsibility rather than a mere title. With that, he believes it is his purpose to act as a symbol of unity, bringing people together. He extends this symbolic role to his umbrella, which he sees as a beacon for the lost, a prominent object that stands out from the crowd and serves as a visible sign of guidance and hope.
