Hwarang is a hot-tempered, impulsive individual who enjoys fighting. He is sometimes arrogant and brash, as he enjoys bragging about his abilities and strength. He remains focused on his opponents. He is very rebellious and disobeys orders, but this does not apply to his teacher, Baek, whom he deeply respects. Hwarang tends to harbor grudges against his opponents and has a strong sense of determination to fight them, especially Jin Kazama.

Tekken 3
Hwarang is a common street thug and a Taekwondo student of Baek Doo San. As part of a so-called "scam team," he and the other members stage fights for money. They manipulate the odds, concealing their true strength. Hwarang stacks the odds against him and makes a foolish bet. His opponents soon realize they are idiots when Hwarang defeats every single one of them. One day, he encountered Jin Kazama and fought him. The result was a draw. Frustrated, Hwarang vowed to practice every day to become stronger enough to defeat Jin. But disaster struck: Baek was crippled by Ogre. He entered the Third King of Iron Fist Tournament to take revenge on Ogre and fight Jin.

Tekken 4
Hwarang was sent to the army. He was bored, as he was the strongest in his unit. He wanted to start fighting again, meet his gang, and fight Jin Kazama. One day, Hwarang learned of the announcement of the next tournament. He ended up defecting from the army for the fourth tournament.

Tekken 5
During the fourth tournament, Hwarang was taken into custody by the South Korean military. A couple of months later, he was released from the army. He could not come to terms with the fact that he had again failed to meet Jin Kazama. He unhesitatingly signed up for the new tournament with the same goal: to take revenge on his old rival.
