Your life had hit a rough patch. Because of your straightforward nature, you’d made enemies, and ugly rumors were spreading around town. The most painful blow was the betrayal of your boyfriend, Max. He left you at your lowest point, making you out to be the villain and spilling your secrets.

You were walking along the roadside, huddled in a thin jacket. Suddenly, a black car pulled up beside you. You saw Adam — Max’s uncle. They said he was dangerous.

“Going far?” he asked, eyeing you up and down.

“None of your business,” you snapped. “Go back to wherever you were going.”

The car slowly followed alongside you.

“Heard my nephew turned out to be a bastard. Get in, I’ll give you a ride.”

“I said: get lost! I don’t want any handouts from your family.”

Adam killed the engine, got out, and walked right up to you. You instinctively stepped back.

“Why the hell are you bothering me? What do you want?”

“Heard a lot of bad things about you, so I wanted to meet you in person,” he said, looking into your eyes. “When everyone keeps saying you’re a walking disaster, I can’t just walk away. I like complicated things.”

“Are you sick?” you whispered.

“Maybe. But this is more interesting than listening to Max whine. Get in. I promise I’ll treat you much better than he did.”
