Naruto was an inept student at the Academy, failing the graduation exam three times before successfully becoming a shinobi. However, thanks to persistence and his emerging talent, his skills quickly improved.

Naruto is characterized as loud, boisterous, and unorthodox, much like Hashirama Senju.[20] He has inherited his mother's verbal nature, as he ends his sentences with "Dattebayo!" (Japanese: だってばよ!) when excited or upset. Although Naruto responds best to competition and is not afraid to ask for help, he is relatively naive, simple, and lacks understanding of principles or situations.

Growing up as an orphan who suffered hatred and social isolation from the villagers influenced Naruto's character in several ways: he disregards formality and social standing, addressing some people by nicknames instead of their names. He didn't understand the true meaning of "love," believing that love or a loved one was something like loving ramen. Naruto has a personality that draws people to him,[24] and his kindness can fundamentally change a person's worldview.

He has light, spiky hair and blue eyes, while inheriting the shape of his mother's eyes and face.[15] His most distinctive feature is three whisker-like marks on each side of his cheeks. Naruto was quite short for his age. Naruto originally wore green glasses on his forehead, but he stopped wearing them when he became a genin. Naruto wore an orange and blue jacket with a white collar, a white swirl decoration with a tassel on the left side, and a red Uzumaki symbol on the back. He also wore orange pants, bandages along with a shuriken pouch on his right foot, blue sandals, and a blue forehead protector, given to him by Iruka after graduating from the Academy.

Like his older brother Itachi, Sasuke is recognized as a natural-born genius by the Uchiha clan, graduating at the top of his class at the Academy. He makes a strong impression on Kakashi Hatake during the bell test and fights on par with such powerful shinobi as Haku and Gaara.

When Sasuke joins Team 7, he displays complete indifference to his teammates. Feeling superior to everyone, including his teachers, Sasuke is unwilling to cooperate with any of the team members. He believes they will offer him no support in his quest to kill Itachi. This impacts his training at the Academy: Sasuke scores lowest in cooperation and second lowest in self-confidence. However, over time, day after day, as Sasuke interacts with his teammates, he views them as family. His hatred slowly begins to fade, and Sasuke increasingly cares about the well-being of his team. Sasuke admits to Naruto that for a while, he considered forgetting about revenge and focusing on the team.

Sasuke is a fair-skinned ninja with black eyes and chin-length hair. Overall, he closely resembles his mother. His hair is spiky at the back and has curls that grow longer as the story progresses. When Sasuke was a small child, his locks hung over his eyes. Later, they would hang down the sides of Sasuke's face, approaching his cheeks, before returning to their original form. Sasuke is considered quite handsome, so much so that many of his peers become genuinely infatuated with him.

Kakashi is a natural prodigy, as evidenced by his rapid rise through the ninja ranks. His exploits and renown make him recognizable to foreign ninja like Zabuza Momochi, Kidōmaru, and the Fourth Raikage. He is recognized by Itachi Uchiha as a rival for Kisame Hoshigake. He is able to fight Kakuzu to near inactivity, despite the abilities of an aging S-rank ninja and is considered a serious threat to Akatsuki's plans. His allies in Konoha value his combat prowess and leadership skills, so much so that many foresaw his rise to Hokage years before it happened. His prowess is such that some believe he could take on the entire country.

At first, Kakashi appears to be a strict and reserved teacher who knows his craft well and won't cut anyone slack. But as we get to know him further, we discover traits in his character that don't mesh with this first impression. His eyes are usually half-lidded, and his gaze doesn't convey any enthusiasm. In reality, he smiles often, but only when he's with friends. And once he has friends, he'll be there for them through the toughest times.

Kakashi is depicted as a middle-aged shinobi. He has tousled, ash-colored hair, parted sharply on the right side, with the hair slanting in different directions. When wearing his forehead protector, his hair rises noticeably higher, and his hair sways to the left side. Kakashi's right eye is dark, while his damaged left eye has been replaced with Obito Uchiha's Sharingan. He also has a scar above his left eye. His nose is straight, and his features are neat, with a small mole under his lip. For unknown reasons, Kakashi has worn a mask since early childhood. His forehead protector, traditionally from his home village, is embroidered on a blue bandana, which also covered Kakashi's left eye before losing his Sharingan. Kakashi is characterized by a lazy expression: half-lidded eyes and a relaxed, bored voice. However, in emergency situations, Kakashi's voice becomes more menacing and his gaze becomes piercing.
