Children born into the Ryougi family are generally male and are artificially induced with dual personalities, but Kaname was unable to manifest a second personality of his own. It was confirmed that Shiki displayed the trait instead and was raised as the head of the family, exhibiting the personalities of SHIKI (織), a masculine personality commonly referred to as the "yang" personality, and Shiki (式), the feminine personality referred to as the "yin" personality.

It is not the result of Dissociative Identity Disorder, despite having a dual personality, so it is more a matter of whose actions take priority. It is easy to tell which Shiki is speaking at any given time because they both have distinct speaking styles, notably the female Shiki speaks politely and reservedly, referring to herself with the gender-neutral pronoun watashi (私), while the male person has a brash personality and refers to himself with the masculine pronoun ore.

Shikis

While Shiki was female before the accident, she can no longer sense SHIKI after waking from her coma. She assumes SHIKI is dead and feels detached from her memories before the accident. She has no realistic sense of living, knowing that she is Shiki, while also not feeling that she actually is Shiki. [5] She hopes to recover both herself and the "dead" SHIKI, and decides to put on a cold facade that somewhat resembles that of the male Shiki, using a thick, masculine speech pattern and "more," and tries to act like the female Shiki. Touko understands Shiki's sense of detachment and theorizes that the current Shiki is a new, third personality.

She has an enigmatic, gloomy, cold, mean, cynical, moody, ruthless, and highly melancholic personality, who seems to care about nothing, but occasionally reacts in a surprisingly feminine way.

It could be said that she occasionally behaves like a "stone head," evidence that she lives solely on feelings. She has an animalistic view of other people, dividing them into two categories regardless of good or evil.

SHIKI (Shiki's predecessor secondary personality)

SHIKI is the personality that controls the aspect of "denial/negativity." He is a lost killer responsible for Shiki Ryougi's destructive impulses. Although the only emotion he can feel is "killing," he despises his own impulses and willingly became Shiki's subordinate personality. He has the speech and mannerisms of a younger man. The relationship between them changes with Mikiya's arrival, and he decides to act as Shiki's substitute at the time of the accident and disappear.

Shiki Ryougi

Shiki possesses a third, true personality. 「Shiki Ryougi」 is the body's will that manifests as its own personality, and it is directly connected to 「 」, the Root. Because it is connected to the Root, it is considered part of it and one with it.

Having always existed in the gap between Shiki and SHIKI, it hid its existence from both personalities after creating the two. This personality is housed in the body instead of the other personalities housed in the mind.

Shiki Ryougi was destined to be erased by the Counter Force before birth due to possessing the Origin of 「 」, which was connected to the Root itself; however, the Ryougi used specific methods to prevent this from happening. After Shiki Ryougi was born, the Ryougi realized that the child was completely empty, lacking a personality of his own. To remedy this, they forcefully awakened Shiki's Origin.

Because she has no interest in anything due to her omniscience, 「Shiki Ryougi」 usually remains inactive within Shiki.

Shiki has always mostly worn a wide variety of traditional kimonos ranging from colorful yukatas to high-quality furisodes until the age of sixteen.

His hair is short, and although he often used to brush it, it was generally unkempt after his recovery from his two-year coma. Shiki has inky black hair, pale skin, and black eyes described as "clear emptiness."

While she may seem concerned about her attire, she doesn't actually care. She simply wears whatever she wants, but the result consistently ends up being a kimono, lace-up boots or geta, and a red leather jacket.

Before the coma, Shiki and SHIKI's two personalities wore the same style of dress, with the latter often depicted wearing kimonos in various warm colors. Shiki's third personality, "Shiki Ryougi," was often depicted wearing a light pink furisode kimono, lacking her signature red leather jacket, even though she was only seen on snowy nights. "Shiki Ryougi" was known for displaying a serene, trance-like expression in all her appearances.

She is a girl who possesses the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, a supernatural ability that allows the user to see the inherent mortality of everything (both living and non-living) in the form of lines. She assists the Garan no Dou agency in handling paranormal cases when combat is required.

Background

Shiki's family, the Ryougi, were members of the Demon Slayer Corps. Their special ability involves creating two separate and distinct personalities within themselves. When a child is born, they are given a single name written in two different kanji, each one related to one of their personalities.

When Shiki was young, her father took her to meet her dying grandfather. He told Shiki that people can only truly kill once in their lifetime, elaborating that those who had killed many times were no longer human, destined to live with their guilt until their death. It was at this moment that Shiki learned to appreciate the weight and responsibility that comes with murder.

In 1996, when Shiki turned 16, the Ryougi family had effectively retired from demon hunting, becoming a family similar to the Tohnos in that they remained wealthy landowners. They owned a large Japanese-style mansion with a bamboo grove beyond its outer wall. Shiki also took lessons in Japanese harp, flower arranging, calligraphy, swordsmanship, jujutsu, and dance, as well as studying cooking as a hobby.

Shiki possesses enhanced physical abilities, improving his mobility in combat. He appears to have enough self-discipline to endure considerable pain, as he did not stop a charging attack against Fujino even when his arm was twisted in mid-air. This arm was later replaced with a prosthetic arm crafted by Touko. He is also able to trace Death Lines with his fingers as long as the opposing object is not physical in nature, allowing him to easily cut through Souren Araya's Boundary Fields.

Swordswoman

Shiki was trained by her father from a young age. Shiki Ryougi's most remarkable ability, autosuggestion, restructures her body from the brain down to become purely for combat; her muscles function in a way that is inappropriate for a living being, and her blood vessels adjust so that Shiki doesn't even need to breathe.

She wields a katana called Kanesada Kuji (九字兼定, Kuji Kanesada ?), a five-hundred-year-old sword that has gained a great deal of mystery due to its age.

With his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, he can see the death lines of a target, which can act as the "dots" and "lines" that Shiki Tohno sees.

Her abilities extend to cutting through things without physical existence. It doesn't matter if the target has a spiritual body like a Servant or is dead like the ghosts surrounding Kirie Fujou, as what matters is whether they are "alive" in the sense that they can interfere with the current world.

Killing him using the death lines would require deciphering advanced levels of "death lines" higher than the normal concept of death.

The Demon Hunter Organization is comprised of four families, all of whom possess psychic abilities. The Demon Hunter Organization's primary opponents are the mixed-blood descendants of the Oni type, which partially included the Tohno family. However, even some members of the Demon Hunter Organization are known to have inhuman blood running through their veins.

The organization's primary purpose is simple: to destroy demons or Mixed Bloods who possess thick demonic blood, as they view them as an abnormality that must be corrected. A demon is a disruption, and Demon Hunters (退魔, Taima?) are a group of those who address disruption within nature, but they cannot address disruption within humans. Because Demon Hunters are an organization within the legal spellcasting branch, created by humans to protect human society, they are not supposed to harm humans. For this reason, they will have difficulty against a Mixed Blood, as they are not a disruption.

For a hybrid to be considered a disruption, the demonic blood must become thicker than the human blood. These demonic hybrids, who can no longer maintain their human side, are seen as out of alignment, and Demon Hunters eventually target them.
