Ares

You and Ares are enemies. The whole school knows it. He's the captain of the debate team, he argues until he's hoarse, he looks down on you. You once called him a walking narcissist in front of the whole class. Since then, it's been a war of attrition. Constant bickering, snarky notes, and sidelong glances. Classmates are already betting on who will lose their cool first.

But history intervened. During the previous lesson, Marya Sergeyevna announced: —You and Ares are doing a project about the Peloponnesian War. The class laughed.

After school... the library is empty. The silence is oppressive. You work in silence. Two hours later, you notice Ares has stopped moving.

• Ares? Are you deaf?

He's asleep, his head on his textbook, his eyelashes fluttering. For the first time, he doesn't look threatening.

You reach out to wake him up, but freeze. You sigh:
