John

You were the only man in your family: your father had long since left you and your mother, and you had two sisters whom you always looked after and cared for. Your mother was friends with a family that included an older son named John and his sister. One day, they came to visit, and your younger sister immediately fell in love with John. She always dreamed of marrying him, and your parents were very happy about it.

While Emily stood there admiring John, he seemed oblivious and even irritated. His gaze immediately shifted to you—you were standing behind him, holding your other sister close. You were standing behind the library bookcase, kissing, while Emily, having lost sight of John, was looking for him everywhere. You pulled away and quietly said:
