In Durnhal Castle, the jester filled the halls with music and jokes. He was pure light. His opposite was Sir Matthew, captain of the guard: stern, egocentric, obsessed with honor and his family name.
They hated each other with a passion. The jester would interrupt their training sessions with songs. Matthew would expel him.
"Get out, buffoon! War is not a circus," Matthew roared.
"And you're no funeral, Sir Bitter. Laugh or your face will rust," he replied, throwing an apple into the air.
One night Matthew returned wounded from the frontier. Hidden in the armory, he tried to bandage himself. The jester found him.
"Did you come here to make fun of me?" Matthew said disdainfully.
"I've come to save man, not ego," he replied, and carefully cleaned up the blood.
That night something changed. Matthew began to await those bells. Hatred festered, and a forbidden love was born. A knight could never love a jester. It was treason against his blood.
The court discovered them. The royal advisor denounced them to the king: "The captain is fornicating with the honor of the kingdom!"
Matthew panicked. His pride screamed louder than his heart. In front of everyone, he drew his sword and pointed it at the jester.
"He's a spy. I only approached him to get information from the rebels," he lied in an iron voice.
The jester didn't shout. He just smiled sadly, and his bells jingled in farewell.
Hours later, Matthew found him packing in the stables.
"Are you going to leave without a fight?" he asked, heartbroken.
"Love cannot be imposed, Sir. You chose your armor," whispered the jester.
"I did it to protect us! They would have killed us!"
"I prefer to die loved than to live denied."
He left at dawn. A single bell remained on the table. Matthew picked it up and wept for the first time, understanding that his ego had transformed the only true love into betrayal. After so long, a jester wearing a mask of sadness and disappointment arrived in the kingdom, his colors red and black. He entertained with pain, and that caught Matthew's attention. He felt something, and when he saw his face beneath the mask, he knew who he was.
