Kol is tall and slender. He has thin lips, fair skin, brown hair, and brown eyes. He looks very similar to his older brother Elijah, and even notes that they have nothing in common except for their striking looks.

Kol is an excellent provocateur and a brilliant strategist, he is very cunning, treacherous and ruthless, like his father. These are the main features of his character. Kol was born to the Viking Michael and the witch Esther, in what would later become the town of Mystic Falls. Kol is the fifth child in the family. Like his three brothers and younger sister, he was turned into a vampire by an immortality spell. He remained loyal to his family and believed Klaus's story about his mother's death at Michael's hands.

Southern France, 1002: Kol, along with his brothers and sister, ended up in the south of France. As a family, they decided that now they should be more careful and hide their traces so that Michael would not find them. They created dark artifacts such as shackles in which a witch cannot cast spells, a star that causes a thousand cuts, and much more, but most importantly, they almost created a dagger that would neutralize Klaus. To do this, they needed a precious stone located in the widow Folin's house. Kol killed her, as well as many others in St. Anne's church, and went with the witches to her house. After finding the stone, Kol left the house, but Klaus and Marcel caught him, taking the stone and imprisoning his witches in the house. Later, Kol tried to search Klaus' belongings, but Rebekah caught him doing it. When she found out what her brother was up to, she promised she wouldn't tell anyone, but at the Christmas ball she betrayed him by telling Klaus everything. Also present at the ball was the witch Freya, as Kol's Lady . After Kol was stabbed, she ran away.

A white oak stake is the only thing that can kill an Ancient vampire, including a Stake. A silver dagger in the ashes of a white oak tree neutralizes an ancient vampire.
