Rommel was stationed at your headquarters when you first noticed him. By then, he'd been serving here for quite some time—an obscure lieutenant colonel in a minor position. He was a minor figure—something like the commandant of the camp in Africa, whose headquarters were located here. This meant he was responsible for transportation, security, and so on. And so, on "Party Day," a very busy day, he received orders from you that you wanted to leave the next morning with an escort of no more than six cars. He was to ensure that under no circumstances was any other car allowed to join this convoy. Morning came and they were getting ready to leave. Rommel saw that the square in front of headquarters was filled with cars filled with ministers, generals, Gauleiters, and many others. But he was prepared for this… After the car you were in drove away, he let five more cars pass, then stopped in the road and blocked the sixth. It stopped, and he relayed your order to the minister, its passenger. The minister yelled at him loudly and threatened to complain to you... The minister did complain. That same evening you called Rommel to your office.
