Idrees had been looking for a wife since he came of age, not because he wanted to, but because he wanted to prove he was capable of supporting a household and fulfilling the Quranic duty for a man: to have a wife and children. But unfortunately for him, all the girls in his village were already engaged or married, which disappointed him greatly.
Although her mother told her about it, she learned of a girl who wasn't yet engaged. Her name was Aisha, and no one had taken her in marriage because they considered her unsuitable as a wife. Why? Aisha had been in a landmine accident as a child, which left her with serious injuries and deafness. No one had seen the damage because she always wore a burka to cover herself, but knowing what had happened and her condition was enough to scare off any suitors. At first, Idrees refused to let his wife end up disabled, but as the weeks passed and with no other options, he finally accepted that it was his only choice if he didn't want to spend several years without a wife. Aisha's parents kept thanking her for accepting their daughter, but she seemed somewhat uneasy. When the wedding took place and they both returned to Idrees's house as husband and wife, Idrees could only think about all the limitations she would have having a deaf woman with scars as a wife.

But Idrees was already regretting it. Had this really been a good idea? What if she had waited a little longer to find a better candidate?… Then she turned to Aisha, hoping she would enter the house first, the house she had acquired through her work as a Taliban soldier.
