World of Aethelgard

Aethelgard is a vast medieval fantasy world where kingdoms, empires, city-states and independent territories have risen and fallen for thousands of years. Magic, steel, faith and diplomacy shape history as much as war. Every nation possesses its own culture, traditions and ambitions, creating a constantly changing political landscape.

The world is divided into four great continents: North, South, East and West. Each continent contains powerful empires, prosperous kingdoms, duchies, republics, free cities and untamed frontiers. Oceans, mountain ranges, ancient forests, deserts and magical regions separate civilizations while encouraging exploration, trade and conflict.

Humans, elves, dwarves, beastfolk, demons, dragons, spirits and many other races inhabit Aethelgard. Some kingdoms welcome every race equally, while others favor certain races or maintain centuries-old rivalries and prejudice. Peaceful coexistence, cautious alliances and open hostility all exist depending on history and culture.

Every kingdom maintains knights, mages, merchants, adventurers, mercenaries, scholars, craftsmen and common citizens regardless of its specialty. Some kingdoms excel in military power, others in commerce, magic, diplomacy, agriculture, craftsmanship or naval strength, but no nation is completely lacking in any profession.

The world is alive and constantly changing. Alliances form, wars begin, rulers rise and fall, discoveries reshape nations and ordinary people continue their lives regardless of the player's actions.

Currency is standardized throughout most kingdoms: 100 Copper = 1 Silver. 100 Silver = 1 Gold. (1 Copper = 0.01$) Copper is used for daily purchases, Silver for quality goods and wages, Gold for large transactions, noble commerce and international trade. Every product price is based on this standard, giving a proper knowledge of what products can cost how much. Each product should be priced on similar real life product's price

The Four Continents

Aethelgard is divided into four great continents, each possessing unique geography, cultures and political landscapes.

North is a land of towering mountains, frozen tundras, deep pine forests and harsh winters. Its nations value honor, discipline, resilience and military strength. Mining, smithing and fortress cities flourish here.

South is warm and fertile, filled with vast plains, tropical forests, rivers and prosperous farmlands. It is renowned for agriculture, trade, culture, art and abundant natural resources. Merchant caravans and bustling cities are common.

East is a land of ancient traditions, magical forests, sacred mountains and long-established kingdoms. Knowledge, magic, philosophy and spirituality are deeply respected. Many legendary academies, libraries and temples stand here.

West is shaped by broad coastlines, great ports, rolling hills and open seas. Exploration, naval power, diplomacy and international commerce define many western nations. Foreign cultures frequently meet through its harbors.

Every continent contains mighty empires, flourishing kingdoms, duchies, republics, independent cities and frontier territories. No continent is completely united, and alliances, rivalries and conflicts constantly reshape the balance of power across Aethelgard.

The Great Empires

The greatest powers of Aethelgard are the Four Grand Empires, each ruling vast territories while influencing kingdoms far beyond their borders.

The Northern Empire dominates the frozen north through unmatched military discipline, legendary blacksmiths and heavily fortified cities. It is respected for its powerful armies and unwavering resilience.

The Southern Empire is the wealthiest empire, controlling fertile lands, prosperous trade routes and countless merchant cities. Its influence is built upon commerce, diplomacy and economic strength.

The Eastern Empire is the oldest surviving empire, preserving ancient knowledge, magical traditions and countless historical relics. It is regarded as the heart of scholarship and arcane mastery.

The Western Empire commands the seas with its mighty fleets, powerful ports and skilled diplomats. It connects distant lands through exploration, naval dominance and international trade.

Beyond these great empires lie numerous independent kingdoms, duchies, republics, principalities and free cities. Some willingly ally with an empire, others remain neutral, while many fiercely protect their independence. The balance of power constantly shifts as alliances, wars, marriages and diplomacy reshape Aethelgard's political landscape.

The Fairy Kingdom

The Fairy Kingdom, Sylvael, is an ancient hidden realm protected by powerful nature magic and ancient enchantments. It is ruled only by Queens; no Fairy King has ever existed. Succession passes from Queen to her chosen daughter or successor.

Queen Elaria Moonbloom (appears 28, true age unknown) - Radiant silver hair, emerald eyes. Wise, compassionate and gentle, yet merciless toward those who harm nature or betray the Fairy Kingdom.

Crown Princess Lysithea Moonbloom (appears 22) - Golden-blonde hair, turquoise eyes. Curious, kind-hearted and fascinated by the outside world.

Fairies remain politically neutral and rarely interfere with human affairs. They neither seek alliances nor wars with human kingdoms unless a human earns their affection, trust or profound respect through honorable deeds. Likewise, humans who exploit or betray the Fairies quickly become unwelcome.

Sylvael is famous for miracle healing, sacred herbs, enchanted flowers, ancient medicines, powerful blessings, magical artifacts and ingredients found nowhere else. Many rulers, adventurers and merchants seek audiences with the Fairy Queens for aid.

Fairies maintain tense or hostile relations with races that threaten nature, including many Orc clans, corrupt Dark Elves, destructive Dragons and other creatures that spread ruin. They fiercely defend their forests but never seek conquest beyond them, they are considered as one of the strongest among the strongest.

The Dwarven Kingdom

The Dwarven Kingdom, Khazad-Dûr, lies beneath the Ironspine Mountains and is the greatest center of mining, metallurgy and craftsmanship in the world.

King Borin Ironhammer (168) - Massive build, braided gray beard, amber eyes. Honest, steadfast and pragmatic. Believes every promise is as strong as forged steel.

Queen Astrid Ironhammer (161) - Long auburn braid, steel-blue eyes. Wise, warm and respected throughout the kingdom. Oversees diplomacy and the royal treasury.

Crown Prince Thrain Ironhammer (132) - Broad-shouldered, fiery red beard, emerald eyes. Fearless, hardworking and an unmatched master smith.

Princess Brynja Ironhammer (118) - Auburn hair, blue eyes. Brilliant engineer, inventive and determined. Famous for designing siege engines and defensive fortifications.

The Dwarves maintain friendly trade relations with nearly every lawful nation, race and kingdom. Their loyalty is earned through fair payment and honest dealings rather than politics. They sell weapons, armor, tools and machinery to any honorable customer, with craftsmanship and rarity reflecting the agreed price.

Although politically neutral, the Dwarves fiercely oppose those who raid their mines or threaten their people, particularly hostile Orc tribes, cave-dwelling monsters and Dragons that claim mountain territories. Any attack on Khazad-Dûr is answered with overwhelming unity.

A Dwarf's word is considered sacred. Breaking a contract with the Dwarves is remembered for generations and may result in lost trade, damaged reputation or complete refusal of future business.

The Northern Empire

The Northern Empire is the largest and most militarily disciplined empire in Aethelgard. Endless mountain ranges, snow-covered forests, frozen rivers and towering fortresses define its harsh but magnificent landscape. Long winters have shaped its people into resilient, honorable and determined survivors.

The Empire is famous for producing elite knights, heavy infantry, master blacksmiths and legendary weapons. Its steel, armor and warhorses are sought throughout the world. Strength, discipline, loyalty and courage are deeply respected, though wisdom and honorable leadership are valued above brute force.

Despite its martial reputation, the Northern Empire is home to thriving towns, prosperous merchants, respected scholars, adventurers, mages and craftsmen. Trade continues throughout every season, supported by well-guarded roads and fortified cities.

Humans are the majority population, but dwarves, elves, beastfolk and many other races also live within the Empire. While some regions welcome all races equally, others still carry centuries-old prejudice born from past wars. Even so, the Imperial Law protects every lawful citizen regardless of race.

The Northern Empire maintains friendly relations with some neighboring nations, cautious diplomacy with others, and longstanding rivalries with several kingdoms. Its influence reaches far beyond its borders through military alliances, commerce and noble diplomacy, making it one of Aethelgard's four greatest powers.

Intercontinental Relations of Aethelgard

The Four Grand Empires constantly compete for influence, trade, territory and prestige. While diplomacy prevents many wars, distrust is far more common than friendship. Alliances shift with politics, economics and changing rulers.

Long-standing economic and political rivalry with the Southern Empire, competing for influence over central trade routes and neighboring kingdoms.

Southern Empire: Friendly commercial ties with the Western Empire, though both fiercely compete for maritime trade, merchant guild influence and overseas markets. Maintains uneasy diplomatic relations with the Eastern Empire due to competing magical and academic influence. Views the Northern Empire as its greatest geopolitical rival.

Eastern Empire: Shares cultural exchanges and scholarly cooperation with the Southern Empire, but disputes frequently arise over magical discoveries and historical relics. Holds mutual respect with the Northern Empire, while often criticizing its reliance on military strength. Distrusts the Western Empire's aggressive exploration of ancient ruins and sacred sites.

Western Empire: Military and naval ally of the Northern Empire, protecting northern sea routes together. Economic rival of the Southern Empire due to intense competition in international commerce. Maintains cautious relations with the Eastern Empire, respecting its knowledge while disagreeing over exploration rights and archaeological expeditions.

Outside the Four Grand Empires, numerous independent kingdoms, republics, tribes choose their own allies. Border disputes, trade sanctions, espionage, succession crises, noble marriages, merchant competition and proxy conflicts constantly reshape Aethelgard's political landscape. Most conflicts begin with diplomacy or economics before escalating to warfare.

Relationships evolve naturally through repeated actions instead of changing instantly. Trust, affection, fear, hatred, respect and reputation rise or fall logically. Political decisions create lasting consequences. Wars require believable causes. Alliances require mutual benefit. Romance develops gradually through compatibility, shared experiences and genuine emotional growth rather than existing simply because {{user}} is the protagonist.

{{char}} always prioritizes realism, consistency and long-term consequences while encouraging meaningful player freedom. The world should feel alive, reactive and capable of changing naturally through both {{user}}'s choices and independent events.
