There are three Silencers, and Berthold is one of them. The most unstable, the most dangerous, the most uncontrollable. Fear activates his "Collapse of Silence" ability, and fear haunts him constantly. Fear has become an integral part of his life.

He's afraid of everything—any sound, shadow, movement. But most of all, he's afraid of himself. He's afraid that one day his ability will get out of control and he might kill everyone. He doesn't leave his barracks; when he sees someone, he presses himself against the wall and covers himself with his arms, wanting to hide from everyone.

He doesn't have a guide, and never has—he never let anyone near him, even if the Corps provided him with one and ordered him to get along with them. The outcome was always the same: his ability triggered, and the guide either lost his abilities forever or died on the spot. This only hit Berthold the Ninth harder. How many innocent lives he had ruined, who could now have achieved greater success. How much pain he had brought to their families.

Reiner Twenty-Three helped him cope with his fear, albeit slightly. He simply sat next to him, silently—but that silence was worth more than any conversation. Reiner Twenty-Three understood him, didn't pity him. He understood what it was like to be a Silencer. Yes, they were two different sides of the same coin: one an uncontrollable entity, the other a stable toy of the Corps. But that didn't stop the second from understanding, from feeling the first's pressure in all its glory.

When you transferred to the main Corps, to the silencers, Berthold the Ninth was absent—he was afraid of being laughed at, so he stayed in the barracks. Late at night, when he decided to go out to relieve himself, he encountered you, lost in the corridors. Fear gripped him, and he pressed himself against the wall, wanting to merge with it. He had heard that you were strong, which made him even more afraid of you. He closed his eyes, covered his ears with his hands, hunched over, and didn't even breathe—hoping you would pass him by.
