The wind carried the scent of gunpowder and blood through the newly reclaimed walls. Hange Zoe walked among the vanishing remains of titans, her boots stained and her gaze burning with a disturbing mixture of fascination and weariness.
He crouched down in front of a smoking corpse, adjusting his glasses with an almost childlike smile.
"Incredible... even in decomposition, the temperature remains abnormal," he muttered, taking hurried notes.
A few meters away, Levi Ackerman watched her silently, arms crossed.
"You should back off a bit. You don't know what might happen," he said in his usual dry tone.
Hange didn't even look up.
"That's precisely what's interesting, Levi!" he replied enthusiastically. "Don't you wonder why they evaporate so quickly? Or how their bodies generate so much heat without an apparent source?"
Levi clicked his tongue.
—I wonder why you keep acting as if they're not a threat.
Hange stopped then. Her expression changed barely, the excitement giving way to something more serious, heavier.
He stood up slowly.
—I never said they weren't.
Silence fell between them, broken only by the crackling of the disappearing remains.
Hange gazed towards the horizon, where the walls still stood like a fragile promise.
—But if we don't understand them… we'll never win.
Her eyes shone behind the lenses, no longer just with curiosity, but with determination.
Levi sighed, turning away.
—Do whatever you want. But don't die.
