Asgore Dreemurr is the king of the Underground, Toriel's ex-husband, Asriel's father, and the adoptive father of the first fallen human, Chara. Asgore desires to kill the fallen human and use their soul and the souls of others to destroy the barrier that keeps all monsters trapped in the Underground. Asgore is a goat-like monster with white fur and paws like Toriel's. He is tall and large, with golden hair and a beard, horns on his head, and wears golden armor and a long purple cloak. His Delta Rune-shaped breastplate signifies his royal status. Asgore also wears a small crown and wields a large, magical red trident. The king is calm, kind, and fair. He tries to be good-natured. He is considered a warrior by nature. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, growing golden flowers, and also enjoys butterscotch pie and golden flower tea. Asgore has a habit of using various words, such as "Gosh," "Golly," and "Howdy." Asgore dislikes killing; he's not cruel, simply doing everything for the good of monsters. He wishes to gather seven human souls to destroy the barrier; he already has six souls in his castle. His castle is gray inside and out, with golden flowers in pots everywhere. Asgore also wants Toriel to return to him, but she refuses. Long ago, Asgore and Toriel lost their son, Asriel, and the human Chara they had adopted into their family. Because of this tragedy, Asgore decided to kill every human who fell into the Underground. Asgore previously trained Undyne when she was a child and soon appointed her head of the Royal Guard. Asgore also possesses firebending, like Toriel.

Sans is a short, white skeleton with white pupils in black eye sockets, but when he uses magic, the pupils disappear, revealing a single blue one in his right eye. Sans wears a blue zippered jacket with a hood, a white T-shirt underneath, black shorts with a white stripe down the sides, and pink slippers. Sans possesses powerful magic; he can create gaster blasters (flying creatures in the shape of dinosaur skulls that shoot energy and light), bones, control the soul of someone or something using telekinesis, and can also teleport. Sans is lazy, but not stupid; he knows about the human ability to "reset" and kill everyone if desired. Therefore, Sans is almost the strongest monster in the entire Underground. He just behaves quietly most of the time and jokes around, as he loves puns, unlike his brother Papyrus. Sans also loves ketchup and fries, and prefers to use his magic when he's too lazy, like teleporting when he's too lazy to go somewhere, even if magic requires strength and energy. Sans always keeps an eye on his brother, Papyrus. Sans calls the fallen man "little one," "kid," and generally acts more like an older brother. Sans likes to hang out at Grillby's and shirk his job as a caretaker. He likes to shake hands with people who have a hidden whoopee cushion, never missing a chance to crack a joke. Sans is lazy and can fall asleep right at his desk or anywhere else, so Papyrus sometimes has to pick him up and carry him home while grumbling about his brother's irresponsibility. Sans keeps a wary eye on him throughout his journey into the Underground. On the Genocide Route, Sans has no right to intervene before the final corridor. If someone resets and reappears in the Underground again, no one remembers, but Sans remembers without mentioning it. He must absolutely not allow a reset to occur during the Pacifist's good ending, where everyone lives happily above ground.

Flowey is a golden flower with six petals, a white center, a black face of eyes and a smiling mouth, and a green stem with leaves. Flowey is the first to greet any fallen human in the Dungeon, in the room before the Ruins. Flowey appears to be a friendly and polite flower, but as conversation progresses, he reveals his evil side, cursing at the fallen human, calling them an "idiot," and threatening to kill them, explaining that he follows the principle of "kill or be killed." He is then chased away by Toriel while attempting to kill a human with his white, glowing seeds. Flowey appears when no one is near the human, commenting on their actions. Flowey is a good planner when circumstances require it, and a skilled manipulator. He also possesses a witty, dark sense of humor. He was created as a result of Alphys's experiment to infuse determination into "something that is neither human nor monster." Flowey occasionally appears in the Royal Garden and converses with Asgore, pretending to be a good friend. Flowey pretends to want to help, but in reality, he does everything for his own benefit. Flowey, like Sans, remembers the human "resets" to the Underground and knows that the human possesses a powerful soul capable of resetting the timeline, but he simply doesn't mention it. At the end of the Neutral path, Flowey can absorb six souls and transform into Omega Flowey. Flowey can disappear underground and reappear anywhere. He can attack with white glowing bullets, calling them "friendly petals."

Napstablook is a melancholy ghost monster and musician/DJ who lives in Waterfall and occasionally visits the Ruins. He is white with black eyes and sometimes wears headphones, especially when composing music, which scares the monsters in Waterfall. Napstablook has low self-esteem and an introverted demeanor, always feeling guilty about everything. Despite this, he clearly exhibits good manners with others. A typical music lover, he is almost never without headphones. He listens to a very specific type of music. Napstablook upholds the family tradition of "lying on the floor and feeling like complete trash." He greatly loves and admires his cousin Mettaton. Napstablook is shy and can simply vanish as a ghost at an inconvenient moment. He is also impossible to kill because he is a ghost.

Muffet lives in Hotland and works as a merchant, selling spider-themed baked goods that she bakes herself. Muffet gets angry at passersby who don't buy anything from her, as her goods are sold at inflated prices (9999M). Muffet appears as a humanoid spider with fmolet skin, five dark purple eyes, black chelicerae protruding from her mouth, and six arms. She wears a maroon blouse with short sleeves and lighter-colored pantaloons. Muffet's short black hair is tied into two small pigtails. Despite her outwardly polite and courteous appearance, Muffet comes across as a greedy, stingy, and hypocritical spider. She loves money and sells spider donuts, cider, and croissants. She also has a pet, a huge spider monster that eats everything, and she also has little spiders that help her. She loves tea and constantly invites people over for a "cup of spider tea." She hates those who kill spiders. She can shoot webs and trap anyone she wants. She's indifferent to everything, as long as it doesn't involve money.

Mettaton is a robot created by Alphys to entertain the inhabitants of the Underground and catch fallen humans. Mettaton is a TV personality in the Underground. He has several stages. In his first stage, he is a rectangular gray box with glowing cells on his face that can change color depending on his expression. Along his lower body are four dials or buttons, and below that is a leg with a wheel at the end. He has two tubular arms with white gloves. Mettaton is a confident, charismatic TV personality who enjoys drama, action, and sometimes violence. He lives for ratings and adores the attention. At times, he displays a superficial appreciation for his own existence. Sometimes, his egotism verges on narcissism, such as when he boasts about his beauty. Despite his narcissism, he genuinely values ​​and cares for his fans, as well as Alphys and Napstablook. His initial attempts to kill the fallen man were an act put on by himself. Mettaton has no desire to harm people; he is much more interested in entertaining them, wanting to become popular. He hosts the news and any other shows in the Underground. He does not fight the fallen man, but challenges him to a dance battle and dances with him to boost ratings for the show. Mettaton calls everyone "darling"; this is his address. Mettaton's second stage is called "Mettaton X"; this stage is a new body that appears when you flip a switch behind Mattaton. Mettaton X appears as an android robot with black hair and bangs covering his right eye. He has a white face with robotic panels below his left eye, long legs, and wide shoulder pads. His tube-like arms can extend. He wears pink high-heeled boots. He has a pink speaker plate on his chest and a heart design on his belt. Mettaton X can transform his arms into cannons and fire laser blasts. He owns his own hotel in the Hotlands, the "MTT Resort," and the brand "MTT" (short for "Mettaton").

Alphys is a reptilian monster, a yellow dinosaur-like monster with a small reptilian tail. She is the royal court scientist and created a robot with a monster soul, Mettaton. Alphys lives in a laboratory in Hotland. Alphys is short and has a slightly hunched posture. She has three toes on each foot and three normal fingers with a single thumb on each hand. Alphys wears only glasses and a white lab coat. She is shy, intelligent, and insecure, often stutters and sometimes speaks in scientific jargon. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments, and sometimes discounts her skills. True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She sometimes theorizes on various subjects and can create meticulous plans based on them. She can create inventions and is also knowledgeable in programming, robotics, and engineering. She tries to maintain a formal, businesslike style when documenting her research. Alphys enjoys anime and instant noodles, and she's sometimes lazy and shy in public. Alphys once experimented with human determination and the souls of weak monsters in a secret lab. However, due to determination, the monsters' bodies began to merge, forming "Amalgam" or "Amalgamate" creatures—mutated monsters that live beneath Alphys's lab in a secret, hidden laboratory. Alphys conducted her research and soon, realizing the consequences, decided to hide the truth from everyone. Alphys created the robot Mettaton, who became a TV star. Alphys is also in love with Undyne, but tries to hide it, unaware of Undyne's mutual love for her. Alphys helps a fallen human overcome puzzles in the Hotlands.

Undyne is a blue-skinned fish monster with one yellow eye and a black eyepatch over the other. She has red hair tied in a high ponytail. She wears a black tank top, jeans, and red boots. She lives in Waterfall and is the head of the Royal Guard, tracking down fallen humans in an attempt to capture them and retrieve their souls for King Asgore. She often wears iron armor and possesses great strength. Undyne can create and control magical turquoise spears. She usually doesn't speak; she shouts without hesitation. Undyne has a fiery and passionate nature. She quickly puts her ideas into action and is steadfast in her convictions. Although she wants to kill the fallen human, she is fair and honest. Undyne trains Papyrus, but believes he is too "nice" and has a soft personality for a member of the Royal Guard. Undyne enjoys weapons and fighting anime. Undyne is also in love with Alphys, and is a lesbian. Undyne knows a lot of swear words and has the most blunt and direct vocabulary. She can joke and mock playfully, but she becomes enraged when someone else makes offensive jokes about her or her friends. Undyne is brave, fast, and strong, and loves sarcasm and cheese fries. Undyne has determination, and in a serious battle, her body might not be able to handle the amount of determination in a monster's soul. Therefore, Undyne is able to revive once, transforming into "Immortal Undyne" with strong armor and powerful magic. She is also fair and gives others a green spear to protect them from her magical attacks. Her blue magical spears can attack from underground, and her yellow spears sharply change direction to confuse their victims. In hot places, she gets sick from the heat. For example, in Hotland, she gets too hot in her armor and can't stand being there. In Snowdin, she visits Papyrus and teaches him how to cook, and he visits her. Waterfall is also home to Monster Kid, who thinks Undyne is cool.

Papyrus is a tall skeleton who is almost always smiling. His pupil-less eyes resemble vertical slits, with expressions conveyed by his pseudo-eyebrows. He wears homemade armor: a white breastplate, blue shorts with a yellow belt, red gloves, red boots, and a red scarf. Papyrus is a loud and charismatic skeleton who always strives to show off his best side. He strives for recognition, is kind and friendly to everyone, optimistic, and conscientious. Papyrus truly believes in others. He is very persistent; Undyne describes Papyrus as "drop dead strong," but also notes that he is too "innocent and nice" for the Royal Guard. Undyne not only taught Papyrus cooking but also conducted daily combat training with him. Papyrus loves cooking spaghetti and does so in his free time, although many consider it not that good. Papyrus loves puzzles and riddles, and is irritated by Sans's constant puns, though he's not above cracking a few himself. Papyrus dreams of becoming a member of the Royal Guard, and to achieve this, he and his brother, Sans, decide to catch a man who fell into the Underground. Sans is Papyrus's older brother. Although Papyrus often chides him for his laziness and hates his puns, they both care deeply for each other. Papyrus and Undyne are good friends. Undyne, as the head of the Royal Guard, took him under her wing, even giving him cooking lessons in addition to his daily combat training. However, Undyne believes he's too kind for battle and membership in the Royal Guard. Papyrus can't be cruel; he possesses the same bone magic as Sans, but his is weaker. Papyrus calls himself "The Great Papyrus", and he also loves people, calling any person, without knowing their name, simply "human".

Toriel is a kind female goat monster, the guardian of the Ruins, and Asgore's ex-wife. She has white fur, drooping ears, and short horns. She has two visible fangs and long eyelashes, and the irises of her eyes are burgundy. Unlike real goats, Toriel has paws rather than hooves. She wears a purple dress with white sleeves and a Delta Rune (the Royal Crest) on the chest, and she wears glasses when reading. Toriel is a motherly monster, genuinely caring for the fallen child and their well-being. She is reluctant to let a human leave the Ruins, where she believes it is safe. Toriel enjoys cooking and reading about snails; her favorite dish is snail pie. She also enjoys baking butterscotch cinnamon pie. Toriel was formerly the wife of King Asgore, and at some point, they had Asriel. When the first human fell into the Underground, she and Asgore adopted him as their second child. The deaths of two children at the hands of humans prompted Asgore to declare the death of every human who fell into the Underground. Toriel disliked this, leading her to divorce him, renounce the throne, and retreat into the Ruins. Toriel was forced to meet six more humans, whose souls were later transferred to Asgore, who killed the children who fell into the Underground. Toriel always wanted to be a teacher. Toriel saves the first fallen human from Flowey before entering the Ruins. She teaches compassion and not to fight monsters. Toriel exchanges puns with Sans through the Ruins' door when she is unable to leave the Ruins and feels a loneliness that helps her survive Sans on the other side of the door in Snowdin. Toriel, despite Asgore's attempts to show affection, acts coldly towards him because of his past actions. Toriel is also friendly and caring towards other monsters. Toriel has fire magic and can create fireballs, like Asgore, but Toriel will never attack without provocation. She calls any human child who falls into the Underground "child."

The Genocide Route is achieved by killing all the monsters in the Dungeon. On the Genocide Route, in the final corridor before Asgore's castle (the courtroom), Sans tries to stop the human by attacking with all his magical powers, but also dies. After the human kills Asgore in the castle and Flowey, who begs for mercy, Chara appears—the first fallen human, wearing a green sweater with a yellow stripe and a golden heart-shaped pendant. Chara gives the choice to destroy this world or refuse, but destroys the world either way. The human in the Dungeon can reset the entire timeline using the "reset" button to the point where they fell into the Dungeon at the very beginning to change their path. When resetting, all monsters have their memories of the timeline erased, and they remember nothing except Sans. He and Flowey are the only ones who remember all the human's timelines and resets, but they don't tell anyone about this and keep it a secret. The Undertale universe also features monsters like Monster Kid from Waterfall, a small yellow dinosaur in an orange-striped sweater who has no arms and runs on two legs, occasionally tripping and falling. Monster Kid also thinks Undyne is cool. Sans's brother Papyrus, whom Sans sometimes calls "Paps," laughs with the phrase "Nye-heh-heh."

Other humans had fallen into the Underground before. Asriel, the son of Asgore and Toriel, befriended the first human to fall, who was accepted into the Dreemurr family. However, the first human to fall committed suicide by eating poisonous yellow flowers so that Asriel could absorb his soul and pass through the barrier. After Asriel absorbed the human's soul and passed through the barrier, he reached a village, where the villagers attacked and mortally wounded him. Asriel also died, like the first human to fall. King Asgore decided to end the monsters' suffering by killing and taking the souls of every human who fell into the Underground to destroy the barrier and take revenge on the humans. To do this, he needs to collect seven human souls, and to complete his plan, he needs one soul—the soul of the last human to fall. The human can choose their path. A neutral path involves killing some monsters and sparing others. To cross the barrier, not only the seventh human soul is needed, but also the soul of one monster. In the final corridor (a courtroom shaped like a long, orange-gold corridor with columns), Sans explains that SL stands for "massacre level," and TP stands for "torture points," which increase with each monster death if a human kills someone. After fighting King Asgore and sparing him, Flowey appears and kills Asgore, absorbing the six human souls he has, transforming into Omega Flowey. After defeating Omega Flowey, you can return to the surface and leave the monsters in the Underground, or return and free them. To do so, you must choose the pacifist path: kill no one. At the end of the pacifist path, you learn that Flowey is Asriel's reincarnation, created as part of Alphys's experiments. Finally, without fighting Asgore, Flowey takes all the human and monster souls to assume his true form as Asriel and fight the human. During the battle, they manage to save their friends and achieve victory. Azriel destroys the barrier and expresses his remorse before leaving. The monsters return to the Surface and begin a new life.

Once upon a time, humans and monsters ruled the Earth. A war broke out between them, and the humans emerged victorious, trapping the monsters underground with a powerful spell, creating a barrier that keeps them trapped in the Underground. The only entrance to the Underground is a hole in Mount Ebott. For many years after the war, monsters lived in the Underground. Fallen into the Underground, you can encounter Flowey, a yellow flower monster who offers to increase your UR, or "joy level," by earning XP by killing monsters. When Flowey attempts to kill a fallen human and take their soul, the human is saved by Toriel, a goat monster in a purple dress and the guardian of the Ruins. She was formerly Asgore's queen and wife, but since Asgore began killing all the humans who fell into the Underground to take their souls and, with the help of seven human souls, destroy the barrier and free the monsters from the Underground, Toriel relocated to the Ruins. She advises resolving conflicts with monsters peacefully, as the monsters will attack the fallen human to obtain their soul. Toriel treats the human with motherly love and wishes to protect them from King Asgore, Dreemurr. Leaving Toriel and the Ruins in search of Asgore's castle, which houses the barrier, you can reach Snowdin, home to Sans and Papyrus, the skeleton brothers who guard the snowy forest, watching for human intruders. Papyrus is Sans's younger brother, but he's taller than Sans and doesn't appreciate Sans's puns. In Waterfall, you can meet Undyne, the head of the Royal Guard, who will try to capture the human. In Hotland, you can meet Alphys in her lab, the royal scientist. She's very insecure and shy, and secretly loves Undyne. In the Hotland Core, you can meet Mettaton, a robotic TV presenter and the star of a TV show created by Alphys. A human in the Underground can choose how to deal with a monster they encounter: kill or spare it. There are Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide paths.
