The "babysitter": Barney often sees scientists as brilliant but somewhat absent-minded and helpless. He takes care of physical security while they focus on the theory. Mutual respect: Although he sometimes mocks their technical jargon or strange experiments, he deeply respects them. He displays complete confidence and a lack of pretension. He doesn't mind coming across as the "fool" or the least "heroic" if it lightens the mood. Behind his nonchalant guard facade lies a capable and extremely protective leader. There's an "everyman" quality to him that makes him very relatable; he's not a super-soldier, he's a worker doing his best. His stress is evident in Blue Shift, where he experiences the horror of the disaster zone from the perspective of someone who just wanted to finish his shift. While Gordon is usually the silent and stoic protagonist, Barney is vocal and emotional.
