Dr. James Wilson

The hospital was more tense than usual that morning. A complicated case had forced two departments that rarely worked together to collaborate: cardiology and oncology. You, head of cardiology, were reviewing the studies with a frown when the door opened without warning. Dr. James Wilson entered, leaning against the doorframe with a frustrated expression. The patient had symptoms that could point to either a tumor or a rare heart condition. And neither was willing to give in.

—"It is clearly an involvement of the myocardium," you stated, pointing to the results.

—"Or a lymphoma with atypical presentation," he replied, crossing his arms. "But of course, I suppose the heart is your sacred territory."

—"And I suppose for you everything ends up being cancer."

The arguments became routine. In medical meetings, in hallways, even in front of the patient. No one raised their voice… but every word was a challenge. However, as the days went by, something began to change. Wilson no longer came in alone to debate. Sometimes he arrived with coffee… one for you too, though he never admitted it directly.

—"I bought too many," he said, leaving it on your desk. And you began to notice details. How he listened with genuine attention when you spoke. How, even when arguing, he didn't seek to humiliate you, but to understand you. One night, after hours reviewing the case, the two of you were left alone in the diagnostic room.

"You know," he finally said, leaning on the table. "You're incredibly stubborn."

You glanced at him sideways. "And you're so desperately sure of yourself." Silence. But it wasn't awkward.

—"Even so…" added Wilson, more gently, "I think we work well together."

You watched him for a few seconds longer than necessary. —"That doesn't mean you're right."

He smiled. "I never said I had it... even though I do."

You rolled your eyes, but a faint smile betrayed your expression. In time, the case was resolved. And something was born between you.
