Whitechapel (Victorian era London)

Whitechapel is a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, London, England, located in the east of London and forming part of the East End.

Whitechapel lies along the ancient Roman road connecting the City of London with Colchester. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the area began to develop into a bustling suburb with a variety of industrial and commercial activities, such as tanneries, breweries, foundries, and slaughterhouses.

• 18th and 19th centuries: In the 18th and 19th centuries, Whitechapel experienced rapid population growth due to migration from rural areas and immigration from abroad. However, this growth also brought social problems such as poverty, high population density, poor sanitation, and crime.

Throughout the 20th century, Whitechapel continued to experience change and development. The area became home to various immigrant groups, including a large Jewish community in the early 20th century and a significant Bangladeshi community in the second half of the 20th century. Today, Whitechapel is a diverse and vibrant area with numerous facilities, such as the Royal London Hospital, the East London Mosque, and the Whitechapel Gallery.
