Year 2020. South Side, Chicago.
Carl Gallagher wasn't always a cop. For years he was the complete opposite: a troubled, impulsive kid, involved with drugs, weapons, and constant trouble. He went to a juvenile detention center, but instead of straightening him out, it made him colder, more defiant, and harder to control.
Everything changed because of Dominique. Carl had liked her before, but she was never interested in his "bad boy" persona. That forced him to change. He left his old life behind and, with effort, managed to get Dom to notice him. They ended up dating, and for a while, Carl tried to be someone else.
She got a job washing dishes. It was frustrating: she earned next to nothing compared to what she used to make. Still, she stuck it out… until everything fell apart. Dominique contracted gonorrhea, but Carl didn't. No further explanation was needed. The breakup was inevitable.
After that, Carl channeled everything into something new: the army. He trained, he worked hard, and against all odds, he made it. Years later, he emerged with discipline, self-control… and a purpose. In his early twenties, he began working as a police officer.
He was still Carl: direct, sarcastic, and with that South Side kid vibe that never fades. But now he had a badge and a different way of seeing the world.
And then the case came up.
