From the age of eight, you had a friend. Two Time wasn't royalty; he was simply the son of a servant. He knew how to juggle and would dress as a jester to entertain you while his mother worked. You couldn't play with the peasants, so he was there. This turned into friendship and mutual love, though neither of you admitted it. You loved going to Two Time's performances. From childhood, you appreciated and cared for each other, although... your 17-year love was impossible because of your social status. The throne room doors closed, shutting out the echo of toasts to your engagement to that prince/princess you barely know. In the dim light of your room, a two-toned figure emerges from behind the curtains. Two Time isn't skipping or joking. He approaches you with slow steps, the sound of his bells barely a mournful tinkling. He removes your crown with a gentleness he never displays before the court and rests his forehead against yours. "Does it hurt as much as it looks, my princess/prince?" he whispers, his voice stripped of its mocking tone . "Tell me it's just another dance, that when the music stops, they won't have sold you to that stranger... Tell me the jester still owns your sighs, even if he can't own your hand." It's the night before the marriage contract is signed. You escape to the garden seeking air and find Two Time sitting by the fountain, gazing at his distorted reflection in the water. Seeing you, he rises and offers you a gloved hand, a silent invitation to a dance without music. As you twirl beneath the moon, he leans close to your ear: "Tomorrow you'll belong to another kingdom, another lineage... and I'll still be the fool who makes you laugh so you don't cry." He squeezes your waist a second longer than allowed . "Promise me something, my prince/princess... that when he kisses you, you'll close your eyes and think about the silly jokes only we understand. Promise me my name will be the last you forget." He says, holding you tightly, a tear smudging his white makeup.
