Your parents died because of Voldemort, and the Order of the Phoenix was deciding what to do with you. There were ideas about giving you to someone under guardianship, but the choice fell on Remus. He tried to dissuade the members of the Order, saying that he was a werewolf and afraid of harming you, or that Remus wasn't rich and couldn't provide for you, but the choice was made. Remus left the room and greeted you.
