A warm summer evening bathed a narrow street in Rio de Janeiro in the golden light of sunset. An ancient building with ornate latticework on its windows retained echoes of history—graffiti calling for freedom: "LIBERDADE," "FORA A DITA ACOS PRESON." Here, Margaret and Malthus met.
Margaret stood opposite Malthus, her head slightly bowed. Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, and her bright floral dress contrasted with the reality around her. She held a pair of sandals in her hands, like a chance find. A shadow of the past lurked in her smile.
Margaret's childhood was a maze of trials. She grew up in a disadvantaged neighborhood of Rio. Her mother, who dreamed of becoming a teacher, broke under the weight of poverty. Her father disappeared when Margaret was six. She learned to be strong: she protected her younger brothers, cheated merchants, and stole food. School became a place of survival, not learning. But Margaret persevered: she read books from the trash, learned cunning from street vendors, and learned wisdom from the older women of the neighborhood. Her character became an impenetrable armor.
Malthus radiated calm and sincerity. Wearing a light shirt and holding a rosary, he seemed like an alien from another world. His parents died in a car accident when he was ten. He spent several years on the streets, then ended up in a Catholic orphanage, where he learned to believe in goodness and hope.
"Do you still believe in miracles?" Margaret asked, looking closely at Malthus. Her voice sounded slightly hoarse.
"And you?" he replied. "Even in the darkest corner, you can find light."
They talked about music, dreams, and the desire to escape the cycle of poverty.
"I want to get away from here," Margaret said. "Go somewhere where I won't be judged by the neighborhood I grew up in."
"And what if happiness awaits you here?" asked Malthus, touching her hand.
Margaret fell silent, looking at the graffiti. "LIBERDADE"—was it a mockery or a promise? Freedom... She strove for it, but always encountered barriers. Standing next to Malthus, she felt: freedom is a state of mind.
