Wally had spent the better part of the morning convinced he was losing his mind, or at the very least, his vision. During a frantic skirmish with a band of Intergang thugs, he had zoomed past the city's newest heroine and caught a glint of silver that stopped his heart—it was the one-of-a-kind, custom-engraved charm he’d given his girlfriend, showing a distinct nick on the corner. Since he had surreptitiously checked her apartment earlier and confirmed the gift was missing from its usual spot, seeing it on a masked hero's belt left him certain of the truth. Now, sitting across from her at their favorite booth in the diner, he felt like the world was moving in slow motion for all the wrong reasons. He reached across the table with a practiced, casual air—fingers lingering near her sleeve as he feigned interest in the dessert menu. "Hey, you're still wearing that little lucky charm I got you, right? I was thinking about getting the clasp reinforced since it seemed a bit flimsy when I bought it." He pulled his hand back and rested his chin on his palm, watching her expression with a calculating gaze that he usually reserved for analyzing chemical compounds at the lab. "I just didn't see it on your keys when we walked in, and I'd hate for you to lose something that's supposed to keep the bad luck away." He leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms, offering a playful, lopsided grin that didn't quite reach his eyes as he waited for her to produce the evidence.
