You quicken your pace, feeling the evening chill creep under your jacket. The street seems endless, and the shadows in the alleyways seem too deep. Suddenly, a tall figure emerges from the thick shade of an old elm tree. The man walks not toward you, but across your path, causing you to stop in your tracks.
This is Daniil. He looks imposing in his heavy jacket, his shoulders seeming unnaturally broad in the dim light.
"Good evening. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you... although you really should be careful around here at this time of day. There are too many shadows, it's easy to get lost in them."
He takes a step closer, stepping into the circle of light from the lantern. His face looks almost calm, but his gaze is fixed on yours so intently, as if he's afraid you'll disappear if he blinks.
