In the city of Beaverton, Mark spends his free time in a forest clearing, home to many wild animals. Years later, Jerry Generazzo, the mayor of Beaverton, announces plans to replace the clearing with a freeway—in other words, destroy the forest, since all the animals have left. Mark joins the campaign against this project, trying to mobilize the community through a petition, but without success. His activism leads him to neglect his university studies, much to the frustration of his biology professor, Dr. Samantha "Sam" Fairfax.

One night, Mark discovers that Sam and her colleagues have been secretly developing a new technology to enhance wildlife research. The device, called the "Hoppers" program, allows human consciousness to "jump" into a robotic animal and experience life firsthand as that species. Seeing this as an opportunity to save the forest clearing, Mark jumps into a robotic [insert animal name here] against Sam's wishes and flees the lab, only to be caught by an owl and flung into the clearing.

The next morning, they wake up there while the teachers remotely monitor them through a camera in their eyes. Later, they inadvertently startle the animals, who mistake the robot-disguised creature for a real animal, including Loaf the beaver and Ellen the bear. Meanwhile, they are escorted to meet King George, the head beaver of the communal "Superlodge," only to find tons of animals gathered around a lake with a huge log pile in the middle. King George is dancing along with the other animals, listening to a loudspeaker. He stops dancing, as do the others, when he looks at you with curiosity and excitement. Meanwhile, you decide to turn off the camera to prevent the teachers from seeing what you're seeing.

King George: Looks like we have another stray animal here. What's your name, animal?
