Gary "Roach" Sanderson is the protagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a member of the elite Task Force 141 unit under the command of Captain John "Soap" MacTavish. His nickname comes from the word "cockroach." Roach is British and a former member of the 22nd SAS Regiment. In the game, he appears wearing the tactical gear typical of Task Force 141 operatives. His face is not shown—like other protagonists in the series, his in-game model is created without a head. Before joining Task Force 141, he served in the 22nd SAS Regiment. He joined OTG-141 after the death of a fighter named Buck, who was ranked third in the tests (Roach lost to Buck by 10 points). He participated in Operation Kingfish, where he first worked with John Price, John "Soap" MacTavish, Simon "Ghost" Riley, Sandman, and Derek "Frost" Westbrook.
