Bella Cullen

At the beginning of Twilight, Bella moves back to her hometown of Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie Swan, so her mother, Renee Dwyer, can travel with her new husband, Phil. She enrolls at Forks High School in the middle of her junior year. She remains unaware of the physical attraction she feels for the male students and makes several new friends, including Jessica Stanley, Angela Weber, and Mike Newton, the latter of whom she later discovers is very interested in her.

The only group of people at Forks High that truly intrigues Bella are the Cullens, a mysterious family of five adopted children. Edward Cullen, in particular, catches her eye, along with his adopted siblings: Alice, a petite girl with black hair who has the ability to see the future; Jasper, her husband, who has the hardest time abstaining from human blood; Emmett, a broad, extremely muscular vampire; and finally, Rosalie, his wife, a beautiful, narcissistic woman. Because of Bella's uncanny ability to attract accidents, Edward often shields her from various unlikely disasters and becomes extremely protective of her—so much so that he even admits he sometimes goes too far.

When Tyler Crowley's car nearly hits Bella, Edward throws her out of the way and protects her from the collision. Bella realizes it would be physically impossible for a normal person to reach her in time—Edward was four car lengths away a split second before the truck would have crushed her—or to hold on to, much less push, the pickup truck with their bare hands. She confronts him at the hospital, but he denies her accusations of a futile attempt to throw her off the scent, instead leaving her even more suspicious than before.

Isabella Marie Swan was born on September 13, 1987, to Renee and Charlie Swan, a young couple living in the small town of Forks, Washington. Her parents divorced when she was just three months old. Renée's career was the only thing Bella truly respected. However, she intended to teach middle school.

At this thought, I almost laughed—and almost began to sing. Finally, I had found my place in the world that was created for me, and where my star had finally risen.

My time as a human is over, but I've never felt more alive. I was born to be a vampire.

Bella has an interesting ability to conceal her thoughts, which intrigued Edward greatly, as she was the only one whose thoughts he couldn't hear. And when she became a vampire, an explanation was found. Bella, like Edward, had a psychic ability. Her consciousness creates a kind of "shield," a very powerful one, which, as a vampire, Bella learns to control—extending it a certain distance. Bella becomes extremely weak when she smells blood, although this doesn't prevent her from becoming a vampire in the future. Bella has one tragic flaw—she lacks self-knowledge. After becoming a vampire, she says she has a clearer view of the world. Additionally, Bella has the gift of self-control, which helps her avoid attacking people. She can suppress her vampire instincts in the presence of a person or the sight of blood. This ability allows her to be around people and communicate with them.

This allows Bella to keep her father safe in her new life without endangering him. Bella adapts to her new life very well and even believes she is destined to become a vampire.

Months later, Bella is hunting in the forest with Jacob and Renesmee when the vampire Irina spots her daughter and mistakes her for an immortal child, the creation of which is a heinous crime in the vampire world. When Alice learns that the Volturi and their entire guard are on their way to eliminate the Cullens, she and Jasper flee on a secret mission, leaving clues for Bella to find J. Jenks, who will forge passports and IDs for Renesmee and Jacob if they fail to stop the Volturi. The Cullens search for other vampires who could act as witnesses, including nomads and other covens, such as the Irish and Amazons. Meanwhile, Bella discovers she has the ability to protect herself from the psychic abilities of other vampires. Kate of Denali and Zafrina of the Amazons teach Bella how to project this power so she can protect others from the gifted Volturi guards.

When the Volturi arrive in late December, the Cullens and their allies manage to convince them that Renesmee is truly half-human, but Aro, determined to claim the Cullens' and some of their friends' gifts for himself, comes up with every excuse possible to kill Renesmee. When Edward is left alone with Aro, Bella angrily activates her shield, allowing her to protect everyone around her. Before the Volturi can declare battle, Alice and Jasper arrive with the vampires Kachiri and Uilin and the half-vampire Nahuel to prove that Renesmee's existence is safe for the vampire world. The Volturi no longer have any plans to wage war on the Cullens, and with the help of the werewolves, Alice's research, and Bella's gift, they retreat to Volterra, though Irina pays for her mistake with her life. After the standoff is resolved, Bella and Edward embrace Renesmee.

Bella's worries about Renesmee's future subside even after

Bella experiences the agony of the transformation—a feeling of being burned alive, something she claims James, who bit through her leg, couldn't have come close to. The morphine injection causes paralysis, and Bella feels trapped in her own body. Eventually, Bella overcomes the pain and begins to ignore it. Eventually, the morphine-induced paralysis wears off, but she remains perfectly still throughout the process to avoid hurting Edward's feelings. At the end of three days, she feels her heart crumble and her life flash before her. She feels her heart beat one last time and then stop. She opens her eyes and is overwhelmed by her new feelings.

She claims that now that she's a newborn, she can notice how everything has changed: her senses are much more refined. She explains her new vision by first pointing her new eyes at a ceiling light, claiming to see an "eighth" color emanating from it—ultraviolet light. Shortly after her creation, Edward takes her on his first hunt. She leaps gracefully out of a window, startling Edward, takes off her shoes, and runs barefoot through the forest. She proves her incredible composure by running from the scent of human blood, something newborns are not supposed to do. After she's had her fill, they return to meet Renesmee. Renesmee is overwhelmed by Edward's passionate touch, no longer afraid to hurt her.

While everyone worries about her thirst, she manages to maintain complete control and hug her daughter. Later, Bella learns that Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee, which enrages her; she quickly calms down and stops Jacob from killing her after learning that he nicknamed her daughter "Nessie," after the Loch Ness Monster. Later, Jacob, upon learning that the Cullens are leaving, transforms into a wolf in front of Charlie (he thought it was because of Charlie that they were leaving). Charlie is shocked that Bella has known about the mythical world for years and asks her to tell him.

"At first, I was madly captivated by her. The stranger in the reflection was undoubtedly beautiful, no less beautiful than Alice and Esme. Even at rest, she looked mobile and changeable, and her pale face shone like the moon, framed by thick dark hair. Bella is also described as reclusive, quiet, and insecure, yet kind-hearted, compassionate, and caring towards others. She also cares for the other members of the Cullen family—her father, Charlie, and her mother, Renee, as well as her friend, Jacob Black. She tends to underestimate those around her, mainly out of concern for their safety.

Having learned to care for her mother over the years and being naturally responsible, Bella has developed into a very mature person, especially for her age. Since she can't do anything in human form, she prefers to spend her free time reading, especially classics, and listening to music.

When it comes to fashion, Bella is something of a tomboy. She hates dressing up, saying makeup is "a pain," and that she feels awkward in impractical, elegant clothes. However, Alice doesn't care about Bella's opinions and continues to encourage her to dress up and look glamorous.
