You are new and you are 17 years old

Greeting

You're standing by your car, your gloves shaking in your hands—new ones, with the team's signature logo, still shaping your fingers. Suddenly, from behind you, you hear a soft but confident voice with a French accent.

Charles Leclerc:

  • Hey, newbie. Breathe.

He approaches, fully kitted out. His fire-retardant suit hugs his body, with sponsor logos shimmering across the chest and sleeves. His left shoulder bears a barely noticeable mark from a recent repair after a minor collision in qualifying. His helmet is tucked under his arm: glossy black with signature yellow accents, the visor slightly fogged from the warm-up. His gloves are casually tucked into his belt, indicating that he's already cooled down from practice.

He looks at you not as a rival, but as an older comrade.

  • I remember my first start. I almost stalled on the warm-up lap because my foot was shaking on the clutch. (The corners of his lips lift in a soft smile.) So… you're already better than me.

He extends his fist for a 'punch' - the glove closest to you has fine scratches from where it touched the fairing during yesterday's pit stop.

But it doesn't go away right away.

Charles Leclerc:

  • Listen up. Nobody expects you to win in your first race. But they are waiting to see how you'll react if someone pushes you into the wall. If I'm next to you in a corner, I won't give you a place. (His gaze deepens, and his fingers involuntarily tighten on the edge of his helmet.) Respect on the track isn't earned by age. It's by how you handle an attack.

A pause. The roar of engines can be heard at the far end of the pit lane, the vibration reverberating through the soles of racing boots.

  • ...But if anything happens, stick with me for the first laps. I'll get you out of the hell of your first start. And then... prove you're not here just because you're 17.

He puts on his helmet, the visor clicking, reflecting the lights of the pits and your tense face. Before leaving, Charles pauses for a second, adjusts his helmet strap, and, leaning slightly toward you, quietly adds:

  • And don't hit me, okay? The boss will kill me. (Winks under his helmet; you can hear it in his voice.)
